I think your Gale is pretty pitch-perfect. Katniss has been putting him off for years (even in canon), and because he has loved her for years, he's of course aware that Peeta has always been looking, too. Katniss is equal parts observant and oblivious. It's a very human balance, and one your version of the story maintains extremely well.

I'm currently re-reading Mockingjay for the first time in months and I'm even MORE convinced that your version of Gale is a natural extension of who he was in canon.

I've always really liked the idea, even if it's not canon, that Gale knew about Peeta's crush. I think Gale's generally perceptive, and it makes sense that the two of them had words and/or glaring and/or whatever else, and that the only reason it's not canon that that was happening was because Katniss didn't notice it at all.

Also, I don't think Gale's being a jerk. Especially now, since they are aged out of the Hunger Games, and it's the time when presumably people start seriously contemplating who they will marry, it makes sense that her low emotional intelligence would be frustrating to him. His jealousy doesn't seem that misplaced to me, personally. And clearly he can still relate to her as a friend even though his feelings are more intense than that.

And one has to wonder if Gale's not wrong that on some level, Peeta went for the shirt that had his name on it on purpose.

I do want to mention that my heart is just aching for Prim, since it seems so entirely unlikely that Astrid's going to survive and beat Finnick's record.

Thanks! I agree re: Gale/Peeta. I don't think it's something Gale would necessarily approach Peeta about, but I think he'd be aware of this guy mooning after the girl Gale likes from afar. While Katniss is her typical oblivious self. :) Also, very glad you think Gale's behavior is making sense!
