What is your most deepest, darkest secret? Answer here.

Everyone knows that if you don't answer your Truth, you have to take a Dare...

Hi! I've been trying to do this all day and for the life of me I can't get step 7 to work. Every time I open a new white layer, the brush doesn't appear. The only time I can get a brush to work is on the actual background image.

Any suggestions?

I've even tried opening a new solid white base and tried to use the brush and nada. It's so frustrating!

hmmm i see, well the way of using a mask bush can change, it´s up to you.
step 7 is how i do it, it´s strange that it doesn´t work for you. Let me see

Create a new white layer
pick a brush and paste it on the new layer (make sure you have the color in black), the brush should appear there. Also make sure that in the tools window the 'actual layer' thing is pressed (i think that´s the name), i can´t open Gimp rightnow so i´m trying to remember the names
And last but not least, make sure you´re using the brush and not the eraser(i know it sonds silly, but it´s happened to me :P)
I hope it´s helpful, and feel free to ask if you still can´t do it, maybe later i can chack the Gimp :D

Thanks for getting back to me. Someone on gimp_users suggested I check my brush mode. It was set to 'overlay' instead of 'normal'. *That* was the problem :) As soon as I changed it to normal, the brush appeared :)

I do have one more question though ... when I use the texture (the same one you used, it was almost transparent. Meaning I can still see the rest of the picture beneath it. Any suggestions?

Here's the version of the icon I made using this tut. It's my first attempt so it's not that great - I plan to use a different picture and I'll toy around with some other brushes/textures. I'm just thrilled that I finally got the brush to work :)

i really like your result!:)
i´m glad to know you solved the problem, know that i think about it, i used ot have that problem for the 'same' reason :P
And talking about the texture, seems to me that you´re opening the texture as a new layer, and there maybe you changed the mode layer, that´s why it looks transparent. What i did was to open the texture in a new window, and there i pasted what we got after step 7, so we just can see what´s into the brush(that is if you did ecxactly what i did in step 7)

And finally, maybe instead os creating three screen layers at the begining, you could just creat two layers, the first one to screen and the one in the top to overlay or soft light. Remember that sort of steps are always dependng on your picture and not only the mode layers but also the opacy of each layer.
(hope i´m explaining it well)

Keep asking if you need to, i´m very pleased to help you :)
