While looking through the Radio Times, I found a letter written by a fan regarding the relationship between Merlin and Arthur, and I would like peoples opinion on the matter.

Hmm, I don't know. The show is obviously not going to go in that direction. And that "everything I do is for him" comment seems to have been taken out of context.

I did think that line was quite sweet, but obviously it's never going to happen.

I took it to be quite literally. Merlin DOES do everything for Arthur, lol. He does all of his chores, he basically looks after him and saves him.

We were just discussing it on merlinxarthur but the post is gone now so I can't direct you to it.

Anyway, isn't going to happen and having the letter in the Times won't matter. TPTB will do what they see as their vision. I think the letter is harmless. The show people already know that there is a contingent out there hoping for A/M, esp. after Expo before last when that same question got asked.

I did check merlinxarthur, but didn't see anything so obviously it was deleted earlier.
I didn't know that was asked at expo. What was the reaction like?

They were asked if there was a romance going on between Arthur and Merlin? Colin got flustered and seemingly embarrassed and Bradley said something about discussing how their characters interacted. Then Johnny Capp said something about homoeroticism in this type of adventure (I'm paraphrasing), trying to make a joke of it and left it like that.

Polly (script editor) told them (the cast) not to look up merlin fanfiction and especially slash.

This happened in the Oct expo last year I think.

Ah, that would be why I didn't know about it them, I'm sure I would've remembered that if it was from the recent expo.

That's what makes me uneasy, the fact that Colin is embarrassed about it, and I know that Bradley isn't too keen on the idea either.

I think it's harmless, if somewhat obnoxious.Fans don't get to dictate the way the series goes; the writers do. To try and make it otherwise is pushing the boundary between fans and creators.

Yes, true. Then again if something like that was written about me and my family read it, I would be quite embarrassed about it. Perhaps i'm just a bit over sensitive though :/

I think that actually doing it woud harm the show (LJ fangirls are a small proportion of the audience) particularly wrt it's 'family' show status and some OS sales.

However I'm sure TPTB have no intention of going there and will pay no attention to the section of fandom that wants slash made canon, so I don't worry about that.

wrt embarrasing the actors: a certain number of mildly crazy fans goes along with the fame, if they're nor prepared to accept that they should consider another career.

I agree, while I am a Arthur/Merlin shipper, I don't want them to go down that route.

Same here. I think Merlin/Arthur is okay in fandom, or for the lolz, but not in any form of seriousness.

I'd say it was harmless fun. I personally think the letter was written for fun (as it's obvious that the show isn't going to go that way), and the Radio Times printed it for fun as well.
It's not something that is meant to be taken seriously, and from what we've seen of the actors from interviews/behind the scenes etc, I think they would realise that.

I'm sure the letter wasn't written intending to harm anyone, and I wasn't accusing the writer of that. I just think that fandom and real life should be kept separate, and it's obvious the writers of the show have no intention of going down that route.
