Actually, I'm usually not a fan of sci-fi either. However, I must say I enjoyed both "Ender's Game" and "Ender's Shadow" (don't waste your time with Speaker for the Dead, I couldn't get past the first couple of chapters I was so bored).
And by the way, why was I not mentioned in the stories of your weekend? I'd like to think I was some significant part of it :)

Ender's Game is a quality read. I teach it. It's amazing. And Juli is right about Speaker for the Dead. Boring as hell.
