I think the fic thing depends on what you wand and how long it lasts? There's a lot of good stories that end on tragedy, bittersweetness, and ambiguity, but there's also a lot of good happy endings, Sometimes people go through phases where they want to write lots of a certain kind of thing, and it passes, and sometimes people find a direction that works for them. (I seem to have trouble doing original work that does end with clearcut happiness. I can do straight happy endings in fanfic, but they're not my strong suit even then.)
Also, I feel your pain re sleep. Most nights these days I'm awake until 2am with insomnia and hot flushes (oh the joy of being perimenopausal!). Then Willow has her first waking at 3am. And another a 4.30am. And 6am. And 7.30am. *yawns*
Nope. It's amazing how your body can get used to chronic sleep deprivation, though. These days I tend to be lethargic, forgetful and irritable unless I remember to not be those things. To be fair to Willow, she is doing much better with sleep than River was at her age. I have hope that we may be heading towards stretches of 4-5 hours of unbroken sleep before Xmas!
For the crust, have you tried putting down baking parchment (internet says that it should be sort of the same product in the US and Australia)? I've had a hard time finding anything that'll stick to that.
