Yikes. Were I to do that, I'd head off to see what Automobile magazine and Car & Driver had to say about current model SUV's. Automobile does an excellent 4 seasons test on many new vehicles and they consider them as cars, not as trucks, so it's a bit more middle of the road opinion and they tell you all the good and bad points that they notice over a full year (hence four seasons). http://www.automobilemag.com/four_seasons_logbook/index.html... )
If you're thinking SUV, I would recommend the Ford Escape with one caveat: 14 miles to the gallon. However, since this is the problem you'd face with any SUV, I bet you've already decided it's okay.
It also has wind noise at high speeds (I think the review said "over 70"?). That doesn't come up often, but mostly on long car trips where wind noise is actually significant.
Of course, with the gas price increases we saw last round of hikes, I'm glad to be getting rid of my Beastie.
(I did the research before I bought my car--the safety rating for car-based rather than truck-based SUVs is significant.)

a small SUV would be a great vehicle to have if you like to go camping and stuff.
