Laelle drops by with some hides for Roa, and gets Ashwin instead. They talk of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. Or of trust, and the relationship between an assistant and the one she assists, if you prefer.
So much for me to swoon over! I love watching how Laelle handles Ashwin, when compared to the way she handled Jensen and handles R'en.
I love seeing how far Ash has come and how good at the game of questions he is now. And that he's looking out for Roa, saying things Roa wouldn't think to or be able to.
But, I think my very favorite bit is the unspoken something happening between Ashwin and Tialith throughout the entire scene. That he seems to gain something from her company, though he doesn't indicate what, and she from his, though she barely makes it visible that she does.
Laelle handles the questioning admirably! And Ashwin's knife-adjusting habit is never more tense than it is here.
It is interesting that Ashwin advises her to give if she wants to get. But who knows, really, if Laelle wants to get. And who knows if rank should necessarily create the privilege of getting first? ^_~
