Robert doesn't usually stay outside at this time, but the constant shifts of architecture have made sleeping difficult - when your bedroom isn't a bedroom half the time, it's hard to find actual time to sleep. So he's been driven outside, to study the way the simulations play havoc with the night cycle of Luceti (which he had largely suspected was simulated anyway).
And then he ends up in a city - an old city, pre-Terran judging by its construction. Certainly not unusual by Luceti standards, though. He almost doesn't notice anything awry until sudden movement draws his gaze - just long enough for him to watch Alice eviscerate the thug.
It's the horrible preciseness of the strike, the same way that Daisy gunned down the Covenant, that makes him stare openmouthed with horror. Not so much that this person he met barely a few days ago can kill, as that she can kill so methodically, where it's so easy and quick and precisely-engineered to destroy ( ... )

/Pre-Terran. You from the future or something? But Massachusetts, east coast state in the United States. Any of that ring a bell?/

... The name "United States" does. It... features prominently in many texts of h-historical relevance in the library.
[Researching is fun. Even if history is one of the subjects Robert is most apathetic toward.]

/Oh yeah? So did we finally blow ourselves up, that's why the country isn't around in the future? Or something else?/

[... It was initially supposed to be a temporary state. But people ended up getting used to it.]

... R-Recovering. The environment has... more or less stabilized, with reintroduction and reforestation p-programs working to a-assist species on being returned from... extinction states.
... It has to be done qu-quite carefully those, lest the food w-web collapse.

That was... essentially how p-previous, pre-Terran efforts went... They usually f-failed in practise.
... I... I must c-confess, I am still not used to paper...

... Yes... t-treasure, I suppose, is the best way to put it...
... Over sixty p-percent of Terran tree cover was d-destroyed before the Great Cleansing u-undid the damage caused by pre-Terran humans... Enough to d-devastate entire ecosystems.
[... And then the damage was like a domino effect.]

... There were also high levels of... o-ocean acidification. Until that was c-counteracted, coral reefs were... essentially eliminated.
[... Terra had taken a pretty big hit, to say the least. Luckily things are better now...?]

Essentially.
[This might (partially) explain why Robert has such a poor outlook on non-Terran humans most of the time.]
