Mind if Robert has some trauma? 8D Pseudo-placeholdery semper_cogitans July 30 2011, 13:35:16 UTC
[Alice has an observer.

Robert doesn't usually stay outside at this time, but the constant shifts of architecture have made sleeping difficult - when your bedroom isn't a bedroom half the time, it's hard to find actual time to sleep. So he's been driven outside, to study the way the simulations play havoc with the night cycle of Luceti (which he had largely suspected was simulated anyway).

And then he ends up in a city - an old city, pre-Terran judging by its construction. Certainly not unusual by Luceti standards, though. He almost doesn't notice anything awry until sudden movement draws his gaze - just long enough for him to watch Alice eviscerate the thug.

It's the horrible preciseness of the strike, the same way that Daisy gunned down the Covenant, that makes him stare openmouthed with horror. Not so much that this person he met barely a few days ago can kill, as that she can kill so methodically, where it's so easy and quick and precisely-engineered to destroy ( ... )

[The population fluctuated due to its status as a hub for hunters and most people went unreported, but it was a baby compared to Boston. Still, it was home to some degree and had its comforts.]

/Pre-Terran. You from the future or something? But Massachusetts, east coast state in the United States. Any of that ring a bell?/

semper_cogitans August 9 2011, 03:50:59 UTC
Yes. S-Significantly in the future to you, if I am not m-mistaken - three hundred twenty-one years, t-to be precise.

... The name "United States" does. It... features prominently in many texts of h-historical relevance in the library.

[Researching is fun. Even if history is one of the subjects Robert is most apathetic toward.]

[Alice gives a small whistle, dully impressed and interested by the bit of information.]

/Oh yeah? So did we finally blow ourselves up, that's why the country isn't around in the future? Or something else?/

As a consequence of... s-severe environmental destruction, all geopolitical boundaries were... d-dissolved into a global governmental system, in order to better manage w-worldwide funds.

[... It was initially supposed to be a temporary state. But people ended up getting used to it.]

/So mankind basically fucked itself over and was forced to adapt and rebuild. Got it. How are things now from where you're from?/

[... Yep. That's a really good summary, actually.]

... R-Recovering. The environment has... more or less stabilized, with reintroduction and reforestation p-programs working to a-assist species on being returned from... extinction states.

... It has to be done qu-quite carefully those, lest the food w-web collapse.

/Right. Wouldn't do to overload the system and destabilize the ecostructure./

[He nods at that.]

That was... essentially how p-previous, pre-Terran efforts went... They usually f-failed in practise.

... I... I must c-confess, I am still not used to paper...

/Not used to paper. So everything's digitalized in some way? Guess that'd make sense, trees would be seen as a valuable resource, or perhaps not even resource, but an.../ [Alice flounders for a moment, trying to find the right words to use.] /treasure? Artifact to be preserved?/

[Robert's voice turns soft at this. It's been awhile since he's tried to explain how it feels to a Terran to see trees - something so important and precious to the environment, recovering from former devastation.]

... Yes... t-treasure, I suppose, is the best way to put it...

... Over sixty p-percent of Terran tree cover was d-destroyed before the Great Cleansing u-undid the damage caused by pre-Terran humans... Enough to d-devastate entire ecosystems.

[... And then the damage was like a domino effect.]

/So I take it no Amazon rainforest or things like that. Oceans, how about those? How'd they fare?/

semper_cogitans August 14 2011, 12:27:58 UTC
O-Ocean levels rose several m-metres at the worst times... manual water e-extraction and freezing had to be done, but by then... m-much destruction had occurred.

... There were also high levels of... o-ocean acidification. Until that was c-counteracted, coral reefs were... essentially eliminated.

[... Terra had taken a pretty big hit, to say the least. Luckily things are better now...?]

/So basically humanity fucked everything up and finally had to suffer the consquences./

...

Essentially.

[This might (partially) explain why Robert has such a poor outlook on non-Terran humans most of the time.]
