I want to go somewhere warmer than Minnesota, preferably a lot warmer. San Diego and New Orleans are out because I just went to SD and am going to NOLA in the near future. Possible ideas are L.A., Austin, ( Read more... )

The plaaaan is to be there is early to mid February, before Mardi Gras. We definitely have to get together!

make hotel reservations a little early all the same--that might be tourist/carnival season still, even if mardi gras is a few weeks off.

Belize is ridiculously beautiful, but probably not worth the trip for just a few days.

This may sound like madness, but have you considered Arkansas? They've got tons of neat caves to tour and you can go mining for emeralds and rubies there. I'm not sure how brisk is gets in december, but it's the south so it can't get terribly cold, right?

Also, cruises are inexpensive options these days. I like them because I get days to relax and eat and then days to frantically tour historic sites and go hiking in beautiful places.

Huh, I haven't ever really considered Arkansas. It's good to hear that there's cool stuff there. I WISH we'd go to Belize but I doubt that's on the table....

Yeah, that was my first suggestion! Plus my cool cousin lives there, so he could lead us around!

Don't come to my city, it sucks. But Asheville, North Carolina fits your criteria.

It's in really nice mountains and the area outside of the city is great for hiking. In the city, there is lots of live music, both in the bars/clubs and on the street, where there are always tons of buskers. Lots of weird/interesting people. And seriously beautiful. It's where the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smokey Mountains hook up.

Also, if you have any interest in appalachian/traditional/bluegrass music... there is a lot of that. And you can hit up a contra dance at Warren Wilson College if you want to.

It won't be WARM there, but it will be way warmer than Minnesota. Probably in the 40's.
