lock your frame to the rack. that way, if they want your bike, they'll probably take the whole thing. if your lock and the rack are too strong and you locked up leaving little room for them to break your lock, they'll just end up failing and you'll get to keep your bike. u-locks are good when used properly, which few people do (and I am guilty of not using them perfectly either, but I at least lock my frame every time, and I'm helpless to fragile, clippable bike racks, anyway).

On the first day of school sophomore year, my bike seat got stolen. nothing else. wtf? who steals a bike seat?

that sucks. I'm sorry. When my brother got his bike stolen, his lock was cut. But this was at school and it was a very new bike.
