God, word, word, word. This is why I can never belong to any organized religion. No matter how well-intentioned, there is always some bigotry and hatred of Others hidden away inside it.
I had a friend who got along with me on just about everything--except that gays had the right to get married. Made worse by the fact that his brother was gay. He insisted he wasn't prejudiced, and his brother agreed with him. I always wondered how his brother felt having to say that.
(although, happy story, he eventually changed his mind and confessed to being unfair, and that he wanted his brother to have the same options he did--so that was neat).
Oh, and another way to tithe your beliefs is donating directly to charities, which, y'know, the church should really focus on. -.-
One of my friends at school told me his very interesting viewpoint--that if they don't want welfare and other methods of the government helping those not in need, then they need to convince the churches that it's their job. He thinks that these programs are there specifically because of corruption in churches. After all, isn't that supposed to be the goal of most churches, helping the meek or whatever they call them?
My wife and I have a scary uncle who honestly believes there is a gay agenda to make kids gay. We found the real agenda of gays on-line "1. Equal Rights 2. If any questions see #1".
My small act of civil disobediance is in calling her my wife when we are not legally married because our state is retarded. That and we file out taxes jointly with a note stating the date we married in Canada and how we don't want to lie and say we're not married. Lawyer said we might have to file an adjustment but that was it. You don't get in trouble with the tax man. I recommend this to all my gay friends if/once they tie the knot in any place less stupid than our own country. <3 to Iowa

This is a great quote and I may steal it, but if I do the credit goes back to you.

My state is also retarded, but I'll keep your tactic in mind to suggest to friends if it comes up! <3
