I really, really enjoyed reading this! I found it well-written in the technical sense and also with a nice balance of dialogue and introspection. For the most part it made for easy reading (no clunky sentences that made me pause) and the prose being descriptive, but not flowery to the point of parody. The back-story you've created is quite interesting and you've made it work seamlessly around the accidental marriage plot. It's an intriguing alternative to the established movie canon. I don't think I've read a story where Steve wasn't an art student, so having him pursue law was a refreshing choice
