CHAPTER 2 @-*
In A Back Alley:
“Usually There Are No Lights and Suspicious People, It Is A Given”
Two Months and one day before Valentine's day.
Honest to god; never had he felt so blessed, proud, and content to be int the life of the person he was, and how many were the people, whom just like himself, could state the same from the bottom of their hearts? Because he was aware that it wasn't in the natural design of life for it to be principally gratifying, or in anyway even close to perfection, but the past three months had been just that. Each day a blessing, each moment endearing, and so much love, in only three months, capable to compensate for so many years worth of distress and sufferance, and with a enough left over to provide for many other more.
He was grateful, he truly was. Yet, that other feeling just wouldn't leave him alone. It was ever present, well hidden in the back of his head, coming out every now and then, making his heart shirking in pain every time it did. That “this is just too good to be true ...” feeling, which led to “... there has got to be a catch ...” and that ultimately, would usually end in “... I knew it”; and never in his life had he want to be wrong.
And maybe he was just trying to make much out of nothing? Blowing everything out of proportion? Which would have probably been considered an offense to those, who currently were maybe in the situation in which he had been five years ago, or any other sort of trouble. These people would most likely hate him for doubting his serene life, and not doing his best to enjoy it in its fullest. However, when the cause of his happiness had gone missing for the past ten days; it was somewhat reasonable to be a bit worried, right?
He hadn't heard from Akira in exactly ten today. Not a phone call, not a text message, nothing at all, and he truly didn't know what to make of it. The elder knew jus how much he was easy to worry, in particular about those he loved; in particular about him. Akira himself was in a respect the same, he worried about his loved ones, about Yutaka, just as much, which just helped increase the brunette's discomforting feelings, and fear that something bad might have happen; because this was really unlike Akira. Then again … that was the Akira he knew five years ago.
He hadn't notice any big changes in the blond, but truly he couldn't affirm he knew him a hundred percent, not like he did at the time, and he felt quite ashamed to realize that he hadn't even bother to ask him any of those questions, ever. Whereas the blond knew everything about his current life, his studies, his job, his hobbies, what he grew to like, where he lived, and now he felt mortified at the idea that he didn't even know where the blond was currently staying; what was he even doing in Osaka? All this time,Yutaka had just allowed the elder to take care of everything, of him in general. For example, he'd be home when Yutaka came home, since he had gave him a copy of the keys to his apartment, and he'd want to know about everything he did that day, and looked pretty much excited about it as well. Or, he'd organize their activities, and for example, every once in a while, he'd take them to have rather expensive dinners, and given that he wasn't sure the other was even working; … where did he even get the money?
And now this was starting to get frustrating, especially having to keep it all in, all by himself, for he hadn't tell anyone, which was also problematic, given that he knew for sure that Kouyou and Takanori had been hearing from each other pretty regularly, thus he wondered whether Takanori knew anything, but how bad would it sound that he had no idea, about where his boyfriend had gone? Too many questions, absolutely not even the smallest clue to any answer, and by experience, he knew when things would soon get out of hand, and he was absolutely not willing to go that route ever again. Thus, it was time to kick his pride to the curb, and ask for help, and hopefully, be so very wrong about everything that had been bothering him.
-You gotta hate rainy days ...- expressed Takanori, his voice such as his face deprived of any sort of expression, as he sighed for the umpteenth time, while staring outside Metrò's main window - … why would anyone like rain? .. everywhere becomes so muddy, so freaking dirty, and the sky! … it is so ... freaking gray ... so sad … - he concluded, as he kept impassively staring outside the window, and finally placed his lifeless gaze on the screen of his cell phone, to which he had been clinging more often since he started dating with Kouyou. It was such a rare vision to see him so emotionally attached to someone, he even seemed calmer, less impulsive, almost as if Kouyou where rubbing of him
-So nice to be in love uh? ...- kindly stated Shinya, glancing up at Takanori, who turned around to give him a pointed look, while profusely blushing, and giving up any attempt to retort, he merely turned around to newly stare at the rain and his cell phone, while the long haired blond, glanced up at Yutaka, who faintly smiled, at his station where he was folding jeans -... I guess I should give a try to intellectual guys … given that bikers were a blatant failure, and I am just still so shocked about how brief the who relationship was! I'd really though I had felt some sort of connection ... guess I was wrong uh? … - resignedly sighed the blond, who was behind the main counter, for once taking care of things regarding the store -... but let's not get into my depressing love life …- he then dismissed, raising his gaze from a stack of money he was counting, and as well staring at the scenery outside the store - do you also find the rain offensive, Yutaka? … - he then almost absently inquired, at which question, Yutaka raised his gaze from the jeans he was folding, and joined the others in the rain-staring
- I ... I happen to like rainy days … -sincerely and apologetically replied the brunette, placing down the pair of jeans he had in his hands, losing himself in the sight of the rainfall-... they sort of calm me down I guess ...- he serenely professed, as his mind went back to his teen-hood in Okinawa; during rainy days, it meant that Akira couldn't play soccer, thus he would normally chose to spend time together with him -... plus isn't it kind of purifying … the symbol of a fresh start? ...- he tried to explain, in a delicate tone, which was clearly not meant to argue Takanori's point, but almost as if he were talking to himself, for that had exactly been how Osaka had welcomed him the day he had first landed five years ago
-...I guess ... they depress me, and- promptly tried to reply the shorter brunette, but interrupted himself, as soon as the ring-tone on his cell phone went off, he then swiftly pressed a button, and unmoving he remained, with a dazed smile on his features, speechlessly staring at the screen of the device, which he was holding with both hands, the way a child would hold a chick -... it was Kouyou ...- dreamily announced Takanori
-obviously ...- lowly muttered Shinya, who unaffectedly resumed his money counting, as Takanori morphed his face into an atypical “Wish it were you, uh?” face
-He wanted to know how was my day ...- he delightedly explained, even though nobody had asked -... and also wanted to know whether you heard from Akira? ... - he added, and shrugged away, turning to face Yutaka with a clueless expression, clearly believing the question to be obviously stupid, at which Yutaka responded with a short, and loud cynical laughter; there really wasn't any right way to do certain things at times
-Funny he should ask, cause I was about to make you ask him the same thing ...- he then professed in an obvious feign cheerfulness, flashing a quick smile, and lowering his gaze from the rather stupid-looking, and speechless once of the other two
-Uh? ...- was all that Takanori's excessively confused and shocked self could manage to express, at which reaction Yutaka, merely shrugged, as he resumed his jeans folding -... care to explain?- then inquired Takanori, walking towards the brunette, and stopping right in front of him, arms folded in chest, and rather stern expression
-As I said, I haven't heard from him … in … ten days, today - began Yutaka trying to sound heedless, but given that he couldn't even fool himself, he doubted he had any chance at doing so with the others, who were clearly silently awaiting for him to give them more information -... I don't know alright!- he finally broke down, newly placing down the same pair of jeans, and frustratedly sighing - I haven't seen him, or heard from him in ten days, and he had never mention anything, I ...- he quickly blurted out, closing his eyes and biting his lips, feeling his distress increasing by the second. It almost felt as if admitting, and saying those things out loud, had actually made his situation much real, and the other two's extremely silent and sorrowful looking expressions didn't help a bit; this, would have been the right moment, in which one of the two ought to have, or could have, smilingly said “Oh I am sure it is nothing big, it will all be alright!”
-T-that's … weird ...- hesitantly replied Shinya, whom exchanged quick confused glances with Takanori, and whose answer did nothing but increase Yutaka's nervousness -... but I am sure it's nothing - he then quickly added, but unfortunately for the blond he had stated the comforting sentence at a wrong timing, if he had some minutes ago, it might have even worked; now it just made things worse
-I swear I will kill him when he comes back … - worriedly hissed Yutaka, newly sighing in frustration, while he forcefully rubbed the palm of his hand on his forehead closing his eyes
-... I am sure … it will all be fine- hesitantly stated Takanori, in a very low tone, followed by a weird laughter; once again, extremely wrong timing
-Gah~! ...I- exclaimed Yutaka in slight anger, but was suddenly interrupted, by the familiar bell chime indicating the arrival of a customer, at which they all revolved their gaze towards the door, to silently observe a long haired brunette, wearing a completely professional, yet fashionable black attire, composedly shake his umbrella outside the store, and after having placed the still wet item in its apposite container by the door, he nonchalantly walked himself into the store
-Good afternoon gentlemen … - coolly saluted the brunette, with a slight nod of his head, and mildly condescending expression, while calculatedly walking in the direction of Takanori and Yutaka, whom averted his gaze in a highly disappointed fashion; … today must definitely was not his day.
-Well hello jerk-face ...- cynically spat Takanori, quickly walking away towards Shinya, who looked just as silently disgusted as the shorter brunette was
-Charming as always I see … - nonchalantly replied the newly entered brunette, momentarily observing Takanori's departure, whom merely raised his hand and flipped him off, which gesture didn't seem to however affect the long-haired brunette, who merely grinned, and took another step forward, placing himself right under Yutaka's nose -... Yutaka ...- he then lowly and almost charmingly called
-… Yuu ...- as lowly replied Yutaka but with a completely unfazed tone, keeping his head heedlessly lowered on the pile of jeans he had to stack away
-“Good afternoon, welcome to Metrò, how may I help you?” … I do not get to be told that? ...- sarcastically inquired the brunette, his tone never faltering, his stance still unmoving as he kept intensely studying the brunette, with a smug grin on his unfortunately extremely handsome features -... I am a customer as well you know? ...- he then pointed out
-... Good afternoon welcome to Metrò how may I help you? ...- rapidly and quite dejectedly replied Yutaka, still as he carelessly continued to stack pants, not once regarding his ex-boyfriend of any attention, because no matter how hard he'd try to
-... I need a tie … - absently replied Yuu, who seemed to have been completely unaffected by the younger's cold tone, and had moved next to seemingly examine a set of black shirts, on a rack right next to Yutaka
-ties are over there suit yourself … - calmly replied Yutaka, who turned around to walk to back, and get another set of trousers, when he was swiftly grabbed by the wrist from their smirking somewhat highly unwanted guest; and what was with people and grabbing him nowadays anyway? -... what?- he nastily retorted, quickly turning to pointedly glare at the amused looking brunette
-Well you cannot expect me to know what kind of tie is appropriate for me, do you? ...- nonchalantly explained the taller brunette, with a pretense matter-of-fact tone -... you used to do that for me after all- he then added, as Yutaka took his time to angrily stare at him, while taking a slow deep breath. Yuu got on his nerves, one each and every single one of them, no matter how hard he tried to act unaffected, the elder's smugness, and never-dying air of superiority really drove him off the wall, which always made him think what had made him want to be in a relationship with the brunette, for a damn long year at that. And Yuu, well he never seemed to have any problems with coming to the store and acting totally untouched, for the way he saw it, and the way it unfortunately actually was, he was a customer, thus he was causing absolutely no harm by being there. Because Yuu, just like the subject he taught at Osaka's University, took life with philosophy; the same way he'd try to justify his cheating on Yutaka earlier that spring.
-I am afraid there are in nature not too many shades of black available, so it shouldn't be hard uh?- angrily hissed Yutaka, as he forcefully freed his wrist from the grasp of the brunette, who merely chuckled
-... right about that - he then coolly professed, resting his arm on a high shelf, as Yutaka walked to the back, to grab his the other set of jeans, wishing and begging for the elder to be gone, as he walked back to the front, but he knew his thought to be useless, for he also knew how much the elder seemed to enjoy playing with his mind; fucking philosopher. Just as predicted he was still there, leaning by the shelf, gracefully observing Shinya, who was still by the counter, half irritatingly, and half nervously trying to ignore Yuu's stare, because the truth of the matter was that no matter how nerve-wracking the professor was, he still was oh so darned attractive; which made thing a whole lot harder for everyone, but Takanori, who simply didn't care about the brunette, because he could have been the most famous, and most handsome person in the entire world, but Takanori simply didn't take shit; and according to the shorter brunette Yuu downright smelled of that.
Heavily sighing, Yutaka placed the set of jeans he was carrying on the counter where he was working, and quickly turn around towards the place where they had ties, picked up a black one with repeated silver patterns, and walking back to his station, he lifted his gaze, and effortlessly threw it at the brunette, who readily caught it, and smiled back at the already gaze averting brunette -... thank you ...- then nonchalantly walking closer to the brunette, as the store bell newly rang, but Yutaka was to irritated to even bother to check and see who the their customer was -... haven't seen you around at school lately? ...- calmly inquired the brunette - ...everything alright?- he then inquired, this time sounding actually concerned; then again, “there are many aspects and shades in the philosophy of life”, always used to say the brunette during his lectures
-Can you please leave me alone? I am not in the mood for you mind-fucking not today ...- quickly snapped Yutaka, glaring up at the brunette
-... Ouch … PMSing I see ... - whispered the taller in pretense offense
-Oi! - suddenly and rather loudly exclaimed a louder familiar voice, as a drenched in rain blonde came storming towards the pair, and roughly turned Yuu around -... who the hell are you, leave him alo- tried to conclude the newly arrived guest, but all that soon was heard in the air, was a loud sound of flash connecting to flash; and it had all happened so fast that Yutaka wasn't even quite sure when exactly his palm had lifted to collide with Akira's cheek
-Well isn't this extremely interesting ? … - nonchalantly observed Yuu, placing his hand in a feign thinking pose, staring at Akira, who was now silently massaging his cheeks, in front of a an extremely speechlessly and eye-widened Yutaka -... for I am pretty sure that if ever had been anyone worthy of such an “affectionate gesture” I should have been the one ... was I wrong ...- he smoothly concluded, with a highly amused grin
-... guess I deserved that … - lowly and apologetically expressed Akira, stretching out his cheek, as Yutaka kept speechlessly staring at him, yet there was so much he wanted to yell at him, such a mixture of emotions that was still running all over his now slightly relived body after having impulsively slapped the elder, who was gazing at Yutaka, nothing but profound grief painted on his extremely wet features, as he tentatively took a step forward towards Yutaka, who instinctively took one backwards, not really knowing why. They staid put silently staring at each other for a bit longer, until Akira suddenly moved again, but this time in a quicker, and more decisive way, successfully reaching the brunette, whom he hugged with all his might, ignoring the fact that he was extremely wet -... I am so sorry baby, so sorry ...- he whispered, at which words Yutaka quickly broke down, as tears quickly began to trickle down his face, which was well hidden inside the elder's chest
-You have no idea, I … I was so scared ...- sobbingly mumbled Yutaka, on the elder's cold chest, raising a fist to lightly hit it against the blond, who merely kept tightly hugging him -... so scared Akira- he quickly reinforced
-I am so sorry ...- newly professed the blond, whom after having lulled the brunette for a little longer, carefully pulled away, still holding the younger by the arm, making gentle hushing sounds in ordered to make him stop crying, while also using one hand to dry the still flowing tears, which made them both suddenly chuckle at the realization that the elder had got them sufficiently wet already, fact that Yutaka didn't really care about at the moment, as he newly united their bodies, relaxing himself on the other, careless of everybody else, or of the fact that he was in fact still working; and there was “a customer”, who had just been assaulted. He had hoped for Akira to come back as soon as possible, but truthfully hadn't expected him to, not at the very moment, and what a relief it was to newly be in his arms, though he knew that the rough part would have had to come soon after
-How about you go home today, ne? … - kindly suggested Shinya, looking up at Yutaka, who hadn't moved an inch away from the blond, whom had wrapped his arms around him -... me and Takanori can take care of this …- he explained, looking at Takanori, who replied with a firm and confident nod-... it's still raining quite hardly, and not many people, have so much time on their hands ...- he dejectedly continued glimpsing at Yuu, whom replied with a rather indifferent grin, and a raise of his shoulders -... to want to come out in this weather, so don't worry, and just go - he concluded smiling at Yutaka, who silently nodded on the other's chest, after a few seconds finally pulling away
-I'm going to take my things, I'll be right back ...- he announced almost whispering, receiving a smile and a nod from the blond, who reassuringly passed his hand on the brunette's arm
-... I'll be waiting here- he then added, retracting his hand, which was quickly caught by Takanori, and whom dragged, a completely caught off guard blond, towards the back -...since we are in a cloths store, and you are completely drenched, let's do something about it ...- explained Takanori, shoving the blond into a dressing room -and while at it … taking care of your disastrous sense of fashion ...- quickly added Takanori under his breath, which was however hard by the blond, who amusingly chuckled -... and can you please pay, and get the fuck out here? … Thank you - very cynically expressed Takanori, with an as cynical smile, as he walked passed Yuu
Some minutes later, after Akira had been properly taken care of by a rather satisfied Takanori, and after Yutaka had grabbed his belongings, comprising a huge umbrella, the two were walking outside, hand in hand, under said umbrella, which was being held by Akira, as the brunette kept his head comfortably
laid on his dried shoulder, as he got ready to begin the most uneasy but due investigation
-I … - then suddenly began the elder -... I had some very urgent family issue I had to take care of, and I am mortified for not having told you anything … I just ...- he then paused, wrapping his free arm around the younger waist - … I … was, actually still am, in a very difficult situation, and for the first time in my life I didn't know what to do … I don't know- he tried to explain in a low tone, as if trying to make sense to the words we was professing himself - he then paused for a second, as Yutaka raised his head to stare up at him, whom looked down at him with his customary smile and quickly added -... but still it doesn't change the fact that what I did was wrong, and I truly apologize for that, I am really sorry Kai, will you forgive? - he then inquired looking truly regretful for the happening
Yutaka smiled with a firm nod, and then sent him a playful glare -... but don't you ever do it again ...- he teased, as the other chuckled, and nodded as well. Thus silent they remained for a while, as the doubts that the brunette hoped would have gone with the blond's explanation suddenly came back out full force. After all, he hadn't told him what the problem was exactly. When they were younger they used to tell each other absolutely everything, and something like this would have been explained in more detail; … didn't he trust him anymore? -Akira? ... - softly called the brunette, receiving a hum by the blond -... do … - uttered the brunette, having second thoughts, very conscious of how mere words could turn a very nice situation into a completely different one; and things were supposedly fine at the moment, weren't?
-What baby? ...- kindly encouraged Akira, looking down at Yutaka -... you know you can ask me anything, if there is something that bothers you ...- quickly added the blond, from which words the younger got a little bit of strength, and decided to go ahead and out with it; it was going to bother him, and its frustration would have forced him into blurting out sooner or later anyways, thus, it was better to say it while they were still in calm and rational state of mind
-Do … you … trust me? - hesitantly inquired Yutaka, causing the blond to abruptly stop in his tracks, and rather perplexedly look down at the other
-... Why would you ask something like that? ...- he inquired, almost sounding offended by the younger's doubt -... of course I do, why wouldn't I?- he then quickly added, as Yutaka, hesitantly looked up at him and gave him a slightly nervous smile
-I am sorry, I just ...- nervously attempted to explain the brunette, averting his gaze to the ground, while unknowingly fidgeting with his fingers -... It's just that you were very vague about what happened to you - he tried to explain, and quickly resumed speaking seeing that the blond was about to say something -and I don't mean to be all I your business, not if you don't want me to … it's just … I feel like your leaving me out of something, and I don't know exactly what, but … it feels like you are showing me only one side of you … and ...- he then paused, erratically moving his eyes from side to side, as if he were looking the right words to continue in his explanation -... for example, I just realized that I don't even know why you are in Osaka in the first place? Or what you have been doing in the past months, job wise ...- he cautiously pointed out to a indescribable looking Akira, who merely stared back at him -... I don't even know where you are living! - exclaimed Yutaka, who was starting to get a bit frustrated by the elder's silence
-Then ...- then suddenly spoke the blond -... how about we go there right now? - proposed the elder, reaching for the brunette's hand
-Now? - quickly blurted out the Yutaka, as Akira resumed their walk, dragging him along
-Yes, why not? ...- calmly stated the blond -... you do have a point after all, and I am sorry, because ou must have been feeling like this for quite a while and I hadn't notice ...- he then added, still keeping his gaze straight ahead, which somehow, slightly innervated the younger, who still couldn't tell whether Akira had been offended by his confession, or whether he truly was sorry.
They turned around, and passed in front of Metrò, on their walk, through which Yutaka peeked to find Takanori glued to the screen of his cell phone, and Shinya cheerfully talking on the phone of the store, as himself and Akira kept silently walking, under the still heavily pouring rain; and never had any of their silences made him feel so uncomfortable
-... a year after you left ...- suddenly spoke the elder -... my parents divorced ...- explained the blond, at which information Yutaka quickly raised his head to gaze up at the elder looking rather remorseful, for having caused the elder to have to say something such as this
-... I'm sorry I- he tried to apologize, but was cautiously interrupted by the blond
-Don't apologize baby it's alright, it's not like it was your fault, and believe me, it was the best decision they could both take ...- he reassured, receiving an apologetic nod by the brunette, who was still feeling extremely guilty, given that there was a big chunk of his own past which he wasn't intending to ever reveal -... I went to study at Todai, electrical engineering as you know, and I actually graduated in April - he serenely continued, receiving another speechlessly flabbergasted look form the brunette
-Congratulations! ...I ...- didn't know... he wanted to say, but stopped, having the feeling that sadly such sentence would have soon became too recurrent -... really congratulations - he quickly added
-Thank you baby … - happily replied the blond with a chuckle -... so I am here on an internship with Kouyou, whom I doubt you remember but he had transferred to our high school, the year before you left … - he then pointed out in a gentler tone -... when you disappeared, I started to … well ...- he then lowly uttered, slightly lowering his head -... to isolate myself a little, and he was always by himself not knowing anyone, and always with his head on some kind of novel, and some very obscene glasses at the time ...- he explained with a light laughter, receiving a faint grin from Yutaka, who was beginning to acknowledge just how much his own actions had affected the blond -... and I don't quite remember to be honest what made us talk, but I had to admit that I truly need the company, and he didn't mind so … - he then paused -... we then went to Tokyou together, and did everything pretty much together after that … yeah … - he concluded, as Yutaka slowly nodded taking in all the information -... here we are!- then quickly announced Akira, as they stopped in front of one of the most expensive hotels in Osaka
-Y-y-you stay here?!- loudly exclaimed Yutaka, with an extremely shocked expression quickly shifting his gaze from Akira, to the hotel, and newly on Akira -... and all this time you have been staying over at my “negative one star” apartment?! - he quickly added, newly staring at the notoriously grand hotel, making the elder chuckle
-Shall we? ...- he then politely inquired, holding the main entrance glass door for Yutaka, who suddenly felt like that actress in that American movie, where she was a prostitute, and he was a rich business man “Something Woman”; prostitute or not, it was a very nice feeling
That night, they dined at the hotel's restaurant, and spent almost the whole reminder of the night, talking inside the exaggeratedly grand Jacuzzi in his room, where they also resumed acting as childish as ever, after which Yutaka was carried bride-style inside the almost royal bedroom, and carefully placed on the bed, where Akira passionately, and lovingly made love to him, newly making everything incredible and very close to perfect, as they lay on said bed in each other's embrace. Yet, if everything was so perfect …
… why was he crying?
