In the Driveway :
“This Is Where Many A New Journey Usually Starts”
Valentine's Day.
… This is your captain speaking, and informing you that in about an hour, we will be begging our decent into Naha Airport. I am being informed that the temperature in Okinawa is currently a nice 22 degrees Celsius, the sky is clear and today...
… today …
… “Today, said sky somehow, really did look like a very familiar road”. Yes, it did indeed.
The original saying stated that “There are some mornings, where the sky looks like a road”, it was his favorite, for it was the prefect way to view life, being the road-fanatic that he was, and in a matter of no time, the “some mornings” part of it, became “everyday”. Because for a person such as himself, whom for so long had only been able to see confusion and uncertainty in the road ahead, to know that somewhere in the sky up above he could spot an even better road, a better life, always gave him a great deal of motivation, and strength to move on, to try and “reach said road”. By becoming a better self, believing that life had endless hidden possibilities and opportunities, and that one day it would have been his time to finally be happy, which might have still not been the case, but it had managed to drag him alive, and almost unharmed to this very day. Unharmed; until this very day. And as he kept languidly staring into Okinawa's clear blue sky, allowing his obviously nostalgic mind to reopen bitter-sweet memories of his past in his still beloved hometown, his heart concentrated on the familiar road that he was currently “seeing” amidst the clouds.
The road was relatively old, but he had no idea of its length, because even though he could clearly see it's beginning, somewhere in the middle of, it had been obstructed by an infinite number of “work in progress” signs, and by the looks of it, it obviously need repair. Though, finally recognizing what road he was looking at, after all said and done, it was to be considered a miracle that said road was still there in the first place, it was to be considered a blessing, that he had been given a possibility to get back on it; he ought to be eternally gratefully, to be given a chance to finally repair it, the way he hadn't been able to. Because he himself had been the one to place those long ago, but never once had he been successful in the attempt of said repair, and it was safe to say, that he'd only succeeded in making things worse for this once extremely beautiful road.
The road of his past; the road of their past.
-Vroom ...vroom ...- eagerly sounded Yutaka, as he played with a toy-car, on the outdoor rail of his new house -... vrooom-vrooom ...- he kept mimicking, carelessly concentrated on his toy, and knowingly disobeying his mother, whom had warned him to stay in the house, and not get out without her around. But there was no way he was going to listen to her; not after she hadn't listen to him, when he'd begged and begged her not to leave their previous neighborhood -Vrooom … vrooom! ... vroom-vroom-vr-ah!- lowly yelped Yutaka, tightly holding his little mouth closed, while stupefyingly observing his car slip from the rail, straight on-top of a circular black area, which instantly moved, causing his eyes to widen in fear, even more than what they already were, for he hadn't expect said black area to produce a suffering whine, or even for it to snap up at him, and reveal the face of another kid, whom obviously, didn't sound or look too happy about having been suddenly hit in the head, as he painfully rubbed the hit spot
-Ittai yo~! ...- loudly protested his young victim, whom didn't waste anytime, in getting up from his sitting position on the grass in-between his house, and the next, swiftly finding himself at the bottom of the ramp of stairs, staring up at Yutaka, who was very much frozen in place frighteningly staring back at the clearly elder kid, reminding himself to put “scary elder kids” as a reason why they should have never moved out from his previous house. Clearly not willing to find out just how painful being punched by a “scary elder kid” could be, he would have as swiftly ran back inside, if it weren't for the fact that the car he had just dropped, and that the boy was now holding, wasn't his favorite, and only one. Thus, trying his best to keep his fear at bay, he gritted his trembling teeth and decided that he wasn't going to abandon his precious car in the hands of the sudden “enemy” without a fight; or ... something like that … maybe he could try and say “sorry”?
-... S-s-sorry? ...- hesitantly stated Yutaka, while nervously fidgeting with his fingers in front of himself, observing the boy lowering his head, and scratching the back of his head, and then newly looking up at him with a seemingly firm and skeptical look, which then turned into a weird quizzical one; how fast could “scary elder kids” run up a stair? … a whole lot faster than he could, that was for sure
-This is your house now?- suddenly asked the elder brunette, looking up at the building, as Yutaka immediately nodded his head so fast, that he thought it might have fallen form his neck. The kid however didn't seem to bother with his scared self anymore, seemingly too busy studying his house, and then his toy-car -... then … - he suddenly dragged out, as he replaced his gaze on Yutaka -... want to play? - he finally asked, smiling up at him, while showing him his own car. Even though, the brunette didn't looks so scary anymore, something with the proposal itself seemed to be a little off, even to Yutaka's mere five year old self. First of, given that the car was in fact his, normally, the question should have really been the other way round, secondly, he didn't know the kid, so he should have quickly refused, forget the car, and left. However, before all the warning signs successfully made their appearance through his little thinking brain; he had already nodded in agreement -good! - excitedly replied the brunette -... wait here one second, I'll be right back!- quickly stated the elder, making Yutaka nod again; … like he was going to live without his favorite car, now that he knew the elder not to be harmful
He observed the kid, running down the stairs, turning to the left, and running up the stairs of the house just next to his. So, the kid was his neighbor, which was very much good to know, just in case he'd have to start looking for his car, in the eventuality that the boy didn't return. But he did. Speedily dashing out the same front door he had entered, running to his side, and up the stairs to meet him with a bright smile, his favorite car, and … chalk? The kid then grabbed his hand, and dragged him down the stairs, without questioning whether he wanted to follow him or not. At this point, it could be pointed out that this kid had done, and made him do, each and every single thing his mother had thought him not to; … nice. Once they reached the end of the stairs, the kid left his hand, and stooped to the stone pavement -... What are you doing?- curiously inquired Yutaka, stooping next to the elder, and observing him drawing lines with the piece of white chalk
-I am drawing roads … - replied the younger matter-of-factly -... cars don't drive in air right? … or handrails ...- explained the blond, widely grinning at Yutaka, placing the chalk down, and diving his hands in the enlarged pockets of his trousers, he brought out plenty other tiny cars, while the younger observed in joyful aghast, literally stunned at the sudden sight of a car-paradise gratuitously displayed in front of him. So many cars, and a road to drive on; … Yutaka had never thought of doing that before -Here ..- he stated pushing some cars in his direction -... my name is Akira by the way, what's your name?- smiled the elder, and quickly inquired
-Yutaka! - cheerfully exclaimed the younger, smiling back at the elder, as he quickly arranged the cars that he was offered, ready to compete
-Nice to meet you Yutaka ...- stated Akira handing some more cars to the younger, who happily gasped and giggled, completely forgetting about his own favorite car, as they began to play in the roads drawn by Akira.
-Oh! ...- suddenly exclaimed Yutaka, stopping himself, tightly holding his car in place
-What happened? ...- questioned Akira, turning to look at the younger in a bit of apprehension
-There is a crack in the street here … I can't keep going ...- smartly observed Yutaka, questioningly turning to observe Akira, who merely chuckled, and picking up his chalk, he drew another road coming out from the side of the “malfunctioning” one, and into the one that Yutaka was trying to get to, and then sloppily wrote DETOUR by it
-What does that say? ...- curiously asked Yutaka, whom for his young age, could proudly admit knowing how to write letters very well; but not necessarily read them
-“Detour” - stated Akira in a patronizing way, most likely feeling proud for having used such a big word
-... And … what ... is that? ...- shyly inquired Yutaka, who was beginning to dislike the idea of not knowing much
-It is a road that sometimes magically appears, and that will take you wherever you want to go in the world when the road you want to use is broken, or any other problem comes up!- confidently explained the elder, folding his arms on his chest, while nodding his head in further reassurance
-Eeeeh, Maji~?!? ...- loudly stated an overly excited, and wide-eyed Yutaka, whose next question would have been “how to make a detour magically appear”
-No, that's impossible! ...- loudly chuckled the elder, obtaining a rather disappointed, and almost offended pout from the younger, who lowered his head away from the other not liking too much the idea of being deceived. However, after not even a minute of grudging, somehow, Akira's laughter became sort of contagious, and it hadn't seem like he had meant any harm in his little joke anyways -I like you! Let's be good friend ne ... Yucchan?- suddenly state Akira, at which Yutaka nodded with a confident wide smile. Well … moving hadn't been so bad after all ...; he wouldn't have whined so much if he knew that he would have met someone with so many cars!
Effortlessly, he placed his hand over his mouth, silently laughing at the the innocent memory of his and Akira's first encounter, while he kept aimlessly staring at the clouds outside the plane. Now that he thought about it, he completely had forgotten about his favorite car that day, or ever, given that Akira had allowed him to go home with as many as he liked of his, as long as he promised to come out and play the next day; which he obviously did. Most likely, Akira had been quite lonely, living in a neighborhood, which was rather far from the center of town, and having been for a long while, the only kid of his age around. Thus, in the end, they practically had “no choice” but to rely on each other, in order to avoid feelings of loneliness, and constant boredom, and he had to have considered himself lucky that Akira was the person he'd met. It really could have been some bully, or a someone who could influence him into doing bad thing; but it had been Akira, and he tuly was grateful
Even though, as he reasoned it, his mother had warned him not to go outside that day so he really … he shouldn't have been there in the first place, so he wondered; would they still have had a chance to meet and bond, the way they did, if he hadn't disobeyed his mother? Meeting wasn't an issue, they most likely would have, being the only kids around and living next door, it would have been rather hard not to. Moreover, they could have met in a less “painful” for Akira, and “disobedient” for Yutaka, way, altogether, if they had given time to time, which suddenly made him think, and consider their encounter, and not himself running away five years ago, has the actual detour in his life; a massive on at that. After all, hadn't it been because of Akira's chalk drawn roads that he'd became the road-lover that he was, and ended up wanting to become a transportation engineer? For all he knew, If they hadn't met the way they did, if they hadn't bonded the way they did, he could have been a regular straight guy, and currently be in medical school.
-Remind me to thank you for this. Jerk ...- he whispered to himself, in a playful sarcastic tone, followed by a gentle smile, as he imagined Akira's feign apologetic grin, imagined the feeling of his hands on himself, as he brought him closer, to must certainly bestow on him the best of kisses. Gingerly slow, he grazed the tip of his fingers across his lips; God how much was he currently craving his lips
-… Thank you for flying Skymark, we hope you enjoyed your flight, and have a pleasant stay -concluded the pilot, as the plane gradually rolled itself on the cement ground towards their apposite gate.
Never like today, had he wished for a walk to last forever, and he had no scruples in having to admit that he was truly scared out of his mind, admitting that he wished there were any other way but this, and he still didn't know how he manged to be actually doing this. He was a hundred percent sure thought that his brain wasn't exactly registering what he was currently doing, and without a doubt, as soon as he'd fly out of Okinawa again, the whole situation was going to hit him, like a train in full speed; and … that wasn't a feeling he was too eagerly looking forward to.
Yet, he did passed the usual control, did grabbed his belongings, and did directed himself toward the main entrance, where, as he kept walking past the speedily moving people with his heart ragingly beating in his mouth, he was shocked and bemused to quickly spot the a familiar waving hand, belonging to a a blond man, whom was now quickly walking through people to get to his immobile self. He hadn't expected that, then again, it was Akira he dealing with; he should have known to expect something like this.
-Kouyou? … - inquired Yutaka in a whisper, sounding more confused than pleased to see the taller blond, whom finally got to him
-Yutaka ...- kindly greeted the elder -... you … came ...- he then hesitantly professed trying to keep smiling as much as he could, but must likely finding it extremely hard, given the current situation, while he glimpsed at Yutaka, as he grabbed his belonging, before the younger could protest. All that the brunette could do was hum in agreement, while following the blond out of the airport
-I should have known ...- suddenly spoke the brunette in an almost nostalgic tone, as they reached and entered Kouyou's car -... I should have known he would have sent somebody - he concluded, gratefully smiling at Kouyou, who replied with a rather pitiful one, as Yutaka returned his gaze to face the road in front of himself, as a much expect silence finally fell amongst them, until the elder finally inquired the much expected observation
-I … - began Kouyou, carefully glimpsing at Yutaka, who was seating next to him -... I will give it to you … - he stated in a slightly more confident tone -... I wouldn't have been able to ...- he slowly added, clearly trying to state what he was about to state in the most delicate way possible -... do this - he finally professed, in a lower tone, keeping his gaze fixed on the road.
-I can't either … - smilingly whispered Yutaka, keeping his head lowered to the ground, and trying the best he could to hold himself up, and stick to his resolution -... the way I am right now, it would kill me to witness such a thing ...- he lowly admitted, sadly staring at his fingers, on his lap -... he really doesn't have much of a common sense, uh?- he then tried to lightly laugh off, turning towards Kouyou, whom however was ended up displaying an awfully sorrowful expression, which Yutaka didn't need to see; he didn't need to be sympathized by other, for it surely didn't make things any easier
-So … why ...- cautiously began the blond -... why did you come? - he then manged to inquired, glimpsing at Yutaka, who took a slow deep breath, and tied his best to smile, as he turned towards the elder blond
-... I came to get us both back on our main road - he replied softly smiling, obtaining a rather confused and quizzical glance from the blond -and I actually … do need your help to do this ...- he then stated in an apologetic manner -... I was going to come and look for you anyways, so I guess it's fortuitous that Akira sent you - he concluded, and explained what he needed for the elder to do, as they finally arrived to the church, into which more and more people beginning to enter, and at the sight of which Yutaka's heart began to slowly die, beat by beat, suddenly desperately wishing he had taken the earlier flight.
But he hadn't. He had reason through it, and convinced himself that he was doing the right thing, and he also knew that this sort of feeling was obviously going to arise, he perfectly knew he would have reacted this way, which was part of why he had needed to have Kouyou by him side, even more than Takanori, whom was also currently in Okinawa in as well, but only to spend a weekend with Kouyou because he wasn't going to, quote by quote, “attend the wedding of a fucking-jerk-deceiver, whom he somehow still feels very bad for”.
Once parked, Kouyou guided Yutaka towards the back of the church, as instructed by Yutaka, through which they entered, and slowly walked into another little building where the bride and groom where supposedly getting ready. As they walked, they passed in front of the brides room, as indicated by the sign on the closed white door, out which a very cheerful, and light laughter could be heard, surely belonging to the bride and her maids, and laughter which Yutaka tried his best to block out, while strongly and desperately hanging on to his own resolution, as he speed walked closer to Kouoyo.
As they kept walking, the unjustly detested joyful voices died down, allowing the younger brunette to calmly breath, at least for a little second, just before the the elder blond suddenly stopped in front of a room with as well a white closed door, on top of which there was a sign stating; “Groom's room”.
-Okay ...- lowly stated Kouyou, looking down at Yutaka, who was almost frighteningly staring at the sign on the door, his lips tightly pressed against each other, almost turning white, and his eyes already lucid -are you … sure you want … to do this? ...- carefully inquired Koyou in an extremely low tone, receiving a single nod from Yutaka, whose gaze was still fixed on the sign of the door -alright then ... I'll be out in a second, okay?- finally announced the elder, receiving another nod from the younger, whom hardly swallowed as he kept staring at the sign on the door, while quickly trying to achieve a regular breathing pace. Kouyou comfortingly caressed hi back, while he cautiously moved him a way form the door's path, soon after going towards it, opening it, and immediately closing it behind himself, leaving Yutaka, with a madly beating heart, the must uncomfortable of feelings in his throat, and increasingly blurry eyes. Shakily taking a few steps closer to the room's wall, he closed his eyes, his heart taking a leap, every time he could perceive Akira's voice making him wonder, if a mere door was truly enough to keep them away from each other.
-Alright alright, now cheer up, it's your wedding! ...- encouragingly explained Kouyou quickly dashing out of the room, with a half smile, making Yutaka jolt out of his miserable thoughts, and observe as the the elder blond, cautiously brought out a key, locking Akira inside the room, as requested by Yutaka, whom while continuously swallowing, walked back in front of the door, forcefully clenching his hands to the side, as Kouyou placed a the key in his pocket, and a hand on the younger's shoulder -... be strong, and good luck ...- stated the elder, receiving a skeptical smirk by Yutaka, who still nodded nonetheless -... I'll be outside when you are done - concluded the elder, with a faint grin, and finally walked away.
… God … somebody … anybody … anything that can! ... help me please. Help us please ...
