Well -- it's not a "new" new job, now, as I've now been in this job for just over a year. It's just new since 2013....

I take a more-than-somewhat smug comfort from the fact that, after several years in that job of being told by my manager(s) that I was not measuring up, it took *four* people to replace me. And, even after being out of that job for a year they are in fact still trying to buy my time back as a consultant because they have had problems that the current people couldn't solve, whereas they knew that I could.

As my current manager said, however, "they should have kept you happier when you were there." The last couple of times they tried to buy me back for consultation, my current manager said a flat "no", and I didn't exactly protest too much. I am doing other work now. Yah-boo sucks.

Whatever you do, never ever forget to show your appreciation of your manager, because you have managed to find that most elusive of creatures; a manager who actually looks out for those working under him.

You probably consider having him bronzed or possibly even gold-plated and put on a pedestal somewhere... ;-)

Oh sweet hopping green jesus on a lilypad, you ain't kidding. luna_the_cat April 20 2015, 20:11:07 UTC
He's a she, but you are NOT KIDDING.

I have a miracle for a manager at the moment:
She is not only technically literate, she is technically good. (I know. Seriously.) There have been a few occasions I've had a glitch or a problem that I was stalled out on, and she's had a look at it and pointed me at a sensible and very workable solution.
AND, she regards her people as actual people. Like, human being people, with rights and everything! And she says things like "look, you have to take holidays sometimes -- don't let this job rule your life. It's not worth it." And she MEANS them.

She does look out for her people. She's shielded us from a lot of shit from upper management, simply by standing up to them at meetings and saying "that's ridiculous", and by god, she has the knack of documenting everything.

I think I already have her on a pedestal. O_O

Just sayin'.

Really good to hear from you. Book, by the way, still misses you.

And I have not forgotten your offer. Be careful, I might actually take you up on it!

Well, I really hope you will! And things seem to be going nicely on the job front, which is nice. I didn't realize workplaces treating people like actual people were so rare.

The UK is attempting to follow the example of the US in workplace practices, it seems -- so yes, sadly, it is rare. :-P
