Its hard to say. Waitress do live off it. Dunkin kids don't. But getting minimum wage does blow.

I notice I give my change more than I used to give to people who make my tea and breakfast (middle of the day) sandwiches. In part because now I have money to tip those people. And in part because I've come in contact with more people in my life who do rely on tips.

I don't tip anyone who pumps my gas, this is few and far between, and typically earn more than minimum wage (I get my gas pumped in the middle of the night at full service stations).

Unfortunately some people who make minimum or better take into account potential tips when they arrange their budgets despite making a "liveable" wage. This hurts when people who once tipped no longer tip due to budget crunches. In most cases I toss in the change I get back from my purchase at Dunkin's unless the service blows that day.

I've always tipped well (20% or more) for exceptional service and at places I frequent (Chili Head, Day Break, iHOP), about 15%-20% for average service, but always at least 15%, even if its sub-par service ( ... )

My orders are typically complicated, so if they can handle the order (sometimes they can't even get my hot tea black no sugar correct), it's worthy of a tip and they do see me at least 3 out of 5 days.
