I went home and went outside and dug seedlings out from the deck. Mom suggested boiling water, I might try that to see if it helps, but I still want to get the fall debris out. I took my time and watched the yard as I worked, squirrels running around, the cats sniffing around the grass, the birds. I wonder when the bats will start flying again. I ( Read more... )

You might want to try vinegar to kill any unwanted plants in places you aren't going to plant anything. My mom recommended this trick to me. Basically, vinegar is a dilute acid, and it makes the soil too acidic for anything to grow there, but over the course of about 6 months, it gets neutralized/washed away and the ground can be planted again (if you want). I use this on my driveway, our gravel areas, and a small portion of our deck and it works really well.

Thank you, sir! I might give that a try. There's a good space of air between the deck and the ground, but even with my digging I'm not getting all the seed pods and stuff out from between the pieces of wood.

sounds like a wonderful day.

i confess to using roundup on the weeds sprouting in the separations between the slabs of our driveway (after trying to dig them out didn't work). eventually i want to research other methods.

I *love* dining out alone with a good book...something I really haven't done in far too long. Note to self: schedule loooooong ass lunch with self while boss is on vacation!!
