I love your James/Elizabeth drabbles. They're always sooo precious. You capture that thread of genuine friendship between them so beautifully.

Even from the very beginning of their acquaintance, there's been an air of protectiveness, even fondness, on James' part toward young Elizabeth. One can easily imagine those feelings naturally progressing over time to true friendship, and eventually (at least for James) to love. Even though Elizabeth may not have been able to return those affections in the way James would have wished, I'd like to think that long-time friendship between them still remained.

IMO, I think that, had Will not already been in the picture (and in her heart), Elizabeth might have accepted James' proposal. In fact, the two might have actually made a good romantic pairing!
