A very rare Wednesday reading post.

I gave up on The Once and Future King. Merlin was young Arthur’s teacher and would magically transform him into various animals so Arthur could be with them and learn their ways. Merlin also had a lot to say about how things work and about a third of the way through the book, I realized it felt like mansplaing ( Read more... )

It's been ages since I read that book, but I do remember finding White's Merlin to be a sententious old know-it-all... or maybe knew-it-all, since he was supposed to be living backwards and gradually forgetting the future (I think. I found that whole trope quite confusing.) As I recall, Merlin's role in the book diminishes as it goes along, but the later parts of the story (the parts the musical "Camelot" was based on) get terribly sad. I'd rather just listen to Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Guinevere."
