Summary: Arthur has finally taken his rightful place as Crown Prince of Camelot but the stress of such an elevation has taken its toll. He and Merlin find themselves tested, perhaps to breaking point as secrets and suspicions boil between them. With everything so fragile, can they hold it together before everything breaks? This is a sequel to
The Wheel's Always Turning. However, there is a summary below.
Author's notes: This story would never have been finished without the unfailing support of
versipellis who betaed, encouraged, shouted and coaxed me into working on it through the tough patches. Also, a lot of thanks to
the_muppet for always believing that I could get it finished in time!
Disclaimer: I do not own Merlin, nor do I get any money from this fiction. It is all for fun.

Previously: Merlin arrived in Camelot to meet Arthur, a servant like himself and Aurelius, the crown prince of Camelot. Arthur was Uther Pendragon’s rejected son, given to a servant to raise after his mother died bearing him. Aurelius was his older brother. However, when Merlin met the Great Dragon, it assured him that it was Arthur’s destiny to become the Once and Future King and that it was Merlin’s destiny to protect him until he could do so. When Merlin saved Aurelius’s life, he found himself juggling the responsibilities of being a loyal manservant to the prince and a good friend to Arthur, who was desperately jealous of Aurelius and longed to be able to take his rightful place in the Pendragon Family. Merlin achieves a sort of balance but when Camelot was attacked by a Questing Beast, Aurelius was bitten. Although Merlin begged the dragon to help him, it refused, reminding him that for Arthur’s destiny to reach fruition, Aurelius must die. Shattered, Merlin returned to Aurelius’s side for his death, then encouraged Uther to accept Arthur. Uther did so and much to Arthur’s joy, he became the Crown Prince of Camelot.
