the fact of the matter is, he doesn't like who he is...or he is trying to make this easier for him by making me hate him.

he gave me the support i needed to have a chance to do it on my own.
I gave him permanent residency.
I try to keep in mind that people don't really work in the black and white. He probably didn't think he was using you for residency. He probably convinced himself of a lot of things. From the timing, though, it does seem easy to come to the conclusion that, as you say, it is terribly convenient. But maybe you've hit upon the way to look at it. He did give you some valuable things, perhaps.
Do you plan to ask for alimony? It seems like you might be entitled to it.
