to IUD or not

I'll admit that I might have hypochondriac tendencies. (serialkarma commences hysterical laughing). I don't run to the doctor for every little sniffle though, cause I really don't like going to the doctor at all. I'm the type of hypochondriac who gets a headache and immediately thinks I have a brain tumor, but doesn't get it checked out because of the ( Read more... )

I was on the pill for two months in the mid-90s and HATED IT (it was like I had PMS the entire time -- exhausted, bloated, sore breasts. UGH). And then last year, my best friend started taking the pill before her wedding, and DID develop bloodclots (after wedding and honeymoon, fortunately). Pulmonary embolism, she ended up hospitalized for two weeks and is still on blood thinners and weekly doctors visits for labwork. I'll never trust the damn thing.

You have my deepest sympathies on the migraine. They're horrible.

I don't know how you deal with as many migraines as you get, hon. It was AWFUL.

I know some women are fine on the pill, but I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in HATING IT.

No help on the IUD cuz I love my pill, but it looks like you've got lotsa great IUD input - I'm a little surprised, too, at the numbers!

But I did want to comment to say GO YOU on the stopping smoking! Yay for you and your health!

PS - I saw Natalia Gutman perform Shostakovich's first cello concerto, and it was Awesome! I thought of you! *g*

oh I love the Shostakovich! I do not however, love the pill! I'd never heard so many bad reactions to it till this post, but it's good to know I'm not alone. I'm glad it works for you!

So you probably have no idea who I am because I'm basically a lurker, but so sorry to hear about your headaches. I used condoms for years because I am a smoker and didn't want to deal with hormones, but I just got an IUD back in early February. I got the non-hormonal kind. FYI- the insertion process is apparently pretty different for everyone. You might want to check out the IUDdivas community here. I haven't had kids and my doctor didn't tell me to take ibuprofen or xanax or anything beforehand (which in retrospect I should have). While I love love love the ease and no thought, no muss no bother part of having an IUD, insertion can be pretty painful. I had the worst cramps of my life the couple of hours after insertion for me. Like I wanted to throw up kind of cramps. Also, I'm still experiencing random cramps (although those are getting better) and spotting from time to time still and my periods are heavier and longer now. On the other hand, my bf only ever felt the strings once and said it wasn't painful, just weird. I got lucky ( ... )

Count me in the "I love my IUD" camp. I have a copper one. I took ibuprofen before the insertion, and while it did cause minor cramping, I totally forgot that it had until I was reading the other comments. For me, they didn't last long at all. The insertion itself hurt like a bitch but only lasted literally ten seconds max.

For the first couple of months, my periods were a day longer and a bit heavier, but after that they returned to normal. Mr. C never said anything about feeling the wire, but I try to check it once a month. I usually forget.
