Oh - I didn't even know you were that sporty. Oops.

I am but I am not?

I was very sporty in high school and even post-college.

But once I started working full-time and teaching, I'm just too utterly exhausted to do anything, so I'm not nearly as sporty as I was.

I still like sports. I get into running moods, I dabble in yoga, I like hiking, and love swimming. But something about living in Texas and dealing with the heat and traffic ruins sports for me.

Family pressure can certainly take the joy out of anything. It is awesome that you persevered and came to enjoy the sport after all.

I had zero interest in sports until Kid got in high school. With no frame of reference, I had no idea that qualifying for State or being an anchor was any big deal. But after years of being dragged around track meets, I realize what a huge amount of effort the kids put into it...Kid has a full schedule at uni and does not plan on doing any organized sports, but I am glad that he had that opportunity in high school.

I really enjoyed track during my senior and junior year. I wanted to run in college, but I was just too overwhelmed with adjusting to college and college classes that I didn't.

Parents living vicariously through their children usually does more harm than good. Did your dad pressure your brother in the same way?

In Russia, I guess extracurricular activities and sports weren't really a thing for public school students, so I didn't get any pressure. I joined the badminton team my junior and senior years so I could get enough P.E. credit to not take my final semester of P.E. My dad kind of pressured me to stick with band and thanks to him I never dropped out, but it was more like I didn't want to disappoint him because he would go to every single one of my concerts and enjoyed watching me play.

Randy had it easier because my dad got a huge job opportunity after I graduated high school, so he was much more focused on that than Randy's future track career. I wonder if part of the reason he was so obsessed with track and me was that he had been unemployed and depressed.

Oh jeez, family really can put a damper on things you want to like. It's good that you got to enjoy the sport after all :)

It’s hard to follow in someone else’s footsteps, but it’s nice that you succeeded on your own terms.
