I am glad this is being discussed in the mainstream media, finally. People do need to take a look at the type of broken system we have where people believe that they are so powerless to affect social change that taking your life becomes a powerful statement. The absurdity seems boundless, sometimes. I tend to think Malachi Ritscher was all of the above: possibly mentally ill and psychopathic, but also possibly a prophet and a martyr. His estranged son claims abuse and that he was a scizophrenic... I wouldn't be surprised- everyone is flawed and nearly everyone has skeletons in their closet.
Suicide is generally an incredibly selfish act- yet he did this selfish act with some sense of greater purpose- for an idea. Still, in the end I'm not sure what was accomplished. I still don't know what to make of all of this- but I do admire the courage of his convictions even as I question the act.
