Do you feel enlightened now?

now that that's over and done, a few things. I have found that Mac OS X for x86 works on my computer. many of you will say, "so what?! or WTF is an x86 anyway" well, the long and the short of it is, I can run Mac OS X on my intel computer, and I likes it. :) so, now that this is behind a cut, I think that I would much benefit from a SSE3 enabled processor. now, I know a fair number of you out there in friend-land are going to say "why don't you get X" where X is an AMD processor, of any type, either because it's cheap and has SSE3, or because it's fast and has SSE3, in addition to being "reasonably" priced. my short answer to that is I'm not getting an amd processor, because it doesn't fit into my existing motherboard. I also have some fairly deep anti-AMD biases, but it may be time to reconsider. either way, I'm sticking intel for the time being because that's what I've got. and besides... I don't NEED to upgrade my processor just yet. =D the only reason I would have for upgrading my processor right now would be so that rosetta and all the software that it runs in Mac OS X on x86 would actually run. I might buy one of Apple's intel boxen when it releases them, but I don't need to worry about that now.

I should also be bringing home a rather decent server from work wihich has been decommissioned. it's a compaq ML 350, which has rather decent specs (Dual Xeon 2.2Ghz, 2Gb of ram, and about 200Gb of U3 SCSI Storage) add to that my ide drives that I have kicking around in my current server, and I'll have close to half a terabyte of storage, and probably all too much of it used... :) it's first mission will be to encode my dvd's that I've ripped. as much as I do LOVE taking up about 5-10x the space, I'd rather prefer to shrink them down.

life has been somewhat interesting lately. given that I can walk again, I'm quite a bit more happy, not to mention, mobile. I don't like being cooped up inside the house, with very little to do. lately I've beeing trying to get my old film negatives scanned, so that I can have them in digital format, and see how much my photography has progressed over the years, as it's been about 8 years now since I've had decent cameras. I'd rather like to get a DSLR (yes yes, WTF is a DSLR?!*) but they're a bit expensive. given that we (damira and I) want to buy a house, I think that this investment can wait, but it won't stop me thinking about it.

I personally would like a Nikon D70s. From the reviews that I've read, and from playing around with it in stores, it seems like a high quality camera, who's only flaw is that it costs money. the shame, the shame, etc etc... :) I'd also pondered the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (350D) but frankly, it felt like a toy handling it in the store. I think that I would have to go to a camera store, like ritz where nobody can just come in an manhandle the cameras (unlike Circuit City and Best Buy) before I make a final decision, because maybe the XT feels better than that... but seriously... the Nikon has a metal frame. the Canon is plastic. there's bound to be a quality difference there. :) this is the point at which brian will comment that I got "schooled" by the clerk in the camera store whilst buying some film cleaner. I would say that I was taken aback by her fervor at defending canon and deriding nikon. to put it more clearly, it would be like trying to convince a windows fanboy that mac os is better. she was a canon girl, and I doubt anything I could have said would have swayed her. such is life. maybe nikon killed her family and her dog, or everything that she loved. I don't know. whatever... :)

what I would really like to do would be take them both home for a week, and put them through their paces, but I seriously doubt that anywhere would let me do that, and I'd rather not make a $1000+ purchase without the ability to test drive the item. I did it with my computers, I do it with cars, so why not with an expensive camera. I think it's sensible... :) (ok, so I only played with the computers at the store, but still, I want a take home test drive camera!) I guess this has sort of turned into a post on geeky/artistic wants and desires, and priorities. on the one hand, I want to get a house, and do all these "grown up" things.... and on the other, I still want to play college student/artist and take pictures. I'm sure I'll find the balance at some point. :)

* - DSLR = Digital SLR^
^ - SLR = Single Lens Reflex *confused look* camera wherein you see what the lens sees, not some crappy viewfinder or lcd screen *comprehension (I hope)*
