For what it's worth, though, some of us Americans do know what a "wireless" is. (I'm sorry to say that I still don't get that particular joke, though. Maybe the problem is that some of the others are just as dense as I am? ;-) )

In Say Anything, John Cusack stands under Ione Skye's window with a boombox playing Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" held over his head. I guess it helps if you're a child of the '80s (or older), like me?

I suspect it's a bit of a "if you get the reference, you're more likely to twig what wireless means from context" sort of situation.

Although funnily enough today at work I made the mistake the opposite way round - it meant wireless internet, and I read it to mean radio! Oops. Showing my age there (she says aged 24...)
