Doug was my mom’s 1st boyfriend after she divorced my dad. He lived with us for six years. He was a closet alcoholic, had Vietnam flashbacks and a raw chicken phobia (also from Vietnam). His arms were “sleeved” in tattoos. He rode a motorcycle and drank hot tea out of a thermo mug. My sister and I were awful to him. He just didn’t understand he would never be good enough - not for us, not for our mom - but mostly we didn’t like him telling us what to do and “acting” like our dad. God we were brats!

Aaron is someone I met very briefly in Washington. He was a friend of good friends. He wore a hat and a trench coat - all black of course. He spent hours hanging out at Denny’s and tried to make everyone feel like they were beneath his monumental intellect. He was moody and watched you like he might just be taking off your clothes or dissecting your cheek muscle. He used big words that seemed to impress and daunt the other “rats”. He had a side kick named “Cave” - can’t really remember him. Most importantly - he had dirty nails.
