As to your second question, I learned a long long time ago that cotton and linen (and most silk) rips way straighter than I could ever cut it and, boy-Viking garb being mostly rectangles, the only things I ever cut are the gussets and gores. Everything else gets ripped. AND if I take a moent to collect some threads from the ravelled edges then I have a bunch of perfectly colored thread for the hand sewing parts.
