Do you know why kiwis can't fly? Because they didn't need to evolve wings to survive, as there are no natural predators in New Zeland. Do you know why they're going extinct? Because of the pets Europeans brought with them when they decided to populate the island. Pets like dogs, cats and ferrets.

Just thought I'd warn you. Not that you deserve it, after having it sent to my house.

Of course it's bad to take it out of its natural environment, but... if they're going extinct, maybe establishing a kiwi population in Japan is to the good? Do you know if your kiwi is male or female? Because if it lays eggs I might want one...

Yeah, but I guess the predators are gettin' 'em or whatever - or at least that's what Onishi told me. So, I'll protect it! And it's a girl! Or, that's what the papers said. I still don't have a name for her yet though...
