There's a branch of speculative fiction that goes back to "The Wizards of Oz" and Barsoom; where an American is somehow placed into a fantastical environment. Or course, they always thrived in this new environment (which always had some specific anti-American mores) and were victorious in the end because of their innate American values. ( Read more... )

And just like you always have a nagging feeling of "Yes but" when reading Mary Sue, I think other countries are inherently suspicious of America because the image we like to project seems too good to be true.

Completely. If civilization ever collapses, I wonder if future historians will debate whether or not the United States actually existed or was just a "Fallen Golden Age" myth.
