My first record player was a cheap red and white plastic affair with which I could play my stack of bright yellow 78s. It was the kind that had a steel needle that was held in place with a thumbscrew on the tonearm, the kind you were supposed to replace the needle after every play. Great reminiscence about turntables - thank you! And... nowadays, many people (including myself) have bought cheap read and white turntables that will play/convert old vinyl into digital format!

I've always associated the single use steel needles with Victrolas and the old hard records and thought that they would tear up vinyl records. Were the yellow records a hard plastic or vinyl?
