i once did an internship at that elephant sanctuary. it was suuuuch an awful place and, despite my undying love of elephants, it's what finally made me change my major from zoology to psychology.
all the people who worked there were super racist and the owners were HORRIBLE people. i can't even describe; they were just bitter obnoxious people. they also lie about what they let their interns do and it was the biggest waste of time ever. i left WAY earlier than my internship was supposed to be and it was probably one of the best decisions i ever made.
the elephants are "happy" relatively speaking. i'm sure they're thrilled not to be circus elephants anymore but they're also still very segregated there and not really allowed to be in the social groups they crave.
it's not just this place that is like that either, it's pretty much all American elephant sanctuaries. there's one in Tennessee that's just as bad and has all these violations against it.
