What's the deal with tipping pennies? And more importantly, don't.

For those who don't know the custom, there's some secret language in the service industry where penny tips are concerned. Clearly, a tip consisting only of pennies is a bad sign, but I'm referring to the case where there's a real tip, and additionally either one or two pennies conspicuously placed on the table. It's been explained to me before,

I still think it's weird that customers regularly send signals that are totally inscrutable to people in the industry.
