Sounds like you got your groove on. I think I'm going to get my teacher's cert, which at the very least should have me substituting at some point, and hopefully eventually with a FT position. If you have any words of wisdom to pass on, I'd love to hear them, when you have the time.
I don't think they'll allow me to start teaching until I'm done with the certification classes / tests, or were you referring to a full-time job in general? I figure that's where substituting would fit in; also, I really could use the money and am having a bear of a time finding any other part-time jobs

Hmmm. Well, I do know that it much harder to find a teaching job in the Austin area than in Houston, and so I expect your friend is probably right. I was willing to locate here and so had no problem finding a job despite my lack of experience.
There is also the California complication. When layoffs in Cali left folks out of work, a lot of districts in Texas went west shopping for experienced teachers. This probably left any number of hopeful interns out of work last year. I imagine it might explain your friend's issue.
Schools do, in fact, hire interns who are working through the certification program BEFORE they have earned the credential. It's actually pretty scary how qualified you do not have to be to get a teaching job here. Hence, my presence in Texas

I'm amazed at how much better this year sounds to last year - huzzah for you! And thumbs up for yoga 3x a week. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to try to keep up my practice when classes start again. . .
