Theme # 1 : Avatar

Jan 08, 2010 12:42

Hurray! Our first theme! Avatar is an amazing, breathtaking movie (even if you don't necessarily agree with the admittedly heavy-handed ideology). I love how it combines the sci-fiction and fantasy elements. Even if you haven't seen the movie, the characters are standard enough for any genre of movie.

Summary
(Copied directly from Yahoo! movies!)
We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth's energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human "drivers" have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora... the Na'vi.

Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures."

Characters
(Cut and pasted from the Avatar website, IMDB, Wikipedia, & my brain. Mostly the first three!)

cheerful, humble, willing-to-learn, open, tough, fearless

Corporal Jake Sully, a disabled Marine who becomes part of the Avatar Program. He was selected for the Avatar program because his twin brother died. After getting lost on Pandora while in his avatar body, Jake is grudgingly accepted into the Omaticaya tribe of Na'vi and must learn to live among them if he wants (his avatar) to survive.

scientist, stubborn, pretends to be cold but really cares about her friends, hot-tempered, maternal

Dr. Grace Augustine, a botanist and head of the Avatar Program, which places human 'pilots' in control of Avatars, which are artificially grown bodies generated with both Na’vi and human DNA. She mentors Jake Sully, and was an advocate of peaceful relations with the Na'vi, setting up a school to teach them English.

cynical, strong, relentless, paternal, protective

Colonel Miles Quaritch, a security contractor who heads the mining operation's security detail, and serves as the film's primary antagonist. Industrious, brutal, and a firm believer of "strength through firepower", Miles Quaritch is the head of RDA's on-planet security. A hardened war veteran, Quaritch regards the Na'vi as little more than dangerous animals, and has no desire or inclination to learn about them, seeing Augustine's research as both a waste of time and a means to an end.

hot-tempered, curious, witty, vivacious, forgiving

Neytiri, princess of the Omaticaya, the Na'vi clan central to the story, who is attracted to Jake because of his bravery. She saved Jake Sully's life when he was being attacked by a pack of viperwolves. After Jake and Neytiri met, she begins to love Jake and eventually Jake joins the Na'vi to help Neytiri and the others save their tribe/village.

cold, almost cruel, strong, leader, stubborn, proud

Tsu'Tey, heir to the chieftainship of the tribe, and Neytiri's betrothed, prior to the events of the film. He is a skilled direhorse and banshee rider known for his archery skills. More than the other Na'vi, Tsu'Tey is immediately suspicious of Jake's arrival amongst his people.

wise, unemotional, good-leader, just, willing-to-listen

Eytucan, the Omaticaya's clan supreme leader, husband of Mo'at and Neytiri's father. He guides his clan with wisdom and fairness.

wise, gentle, spiritual, sensitive, realistic

Mo'at, the Omaticaya's spiritual leader, Neytiri's mother, and consort to clan leader Eytucan. She interprets the will of Eywa, the Mother of Life.

generous, helpful, fascinated, analytical, scholarly

Norm Spellman, an anthropologist who studies plant and nature life as part of the Avatar Program. He arrives on Pandora at the same time as Jake Sully, and assumes control of an avatar. Norm underwent avatar training with Jake's late twin brother, and the mission to Pandora is his first field operation. Fascinated by the People and their culture, Norm is more than happy to learn about the People.

thinks for herself, independent, strong, brave

Trudy Chacón, a Marine fighter pilot assigned to support the Avatar Program. Tough, beautiful and dedicated to a good cause, Trudy will find her loyalties tested as she begins to question the moral ramifications of the RDA and their activities on Pandora.

shrewd, greedy, concerned with appearances, ends justify the means, chooses to be ignorant

Parker Selfridge is the "company man" on Pandora, the Chief Administrator for RDA. He's in charge of all the mining operations on the planet and determined not the let the 'natives' stand in his way. He'd like to use diplomacy- largely because it looks better from a PR standpoint- but is prepared to use force if necessary.

cautious, thoughtful, insightful, rational

Dr. Max Patel, a scientist who works in the Avatar Program. He is the chief Systems Officer for the Avatar Program, overseeing and controlling the technical logistics of the avatar missions from his computer station at RDA's base.

gung-ho, passionate, coarse, callous

Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, a soldier-for-hire and a security contractor working under Colonel Quaritch. He is very gung-ho and enjoys a good fight, but respects the dangers of Pandora enough to not do anything stupid.

Have at it!
