Best way to mail something to Italy?

Does anyone know the best way to mail a small package to Italy? I've heard wacky things about their postal service and it seems that the USPS doesn't even do global priority there...has anyone successfully mailed something to Italy using Airmail? (or any other method).

Thanks! If anyone has any helpful hints...
