First Date Ianto stared down at the menu written in French, avoiding looking up at Jack. His heart was pounding, and his palms were sweating. As much as he wanted Jack to think he was calm and completely in control, inside he wasn't.
This wasn't anywhere near the relationship they had before Jack left them. When he showed up out of nowhere, cavalier as you please, Ianto expected that Jack would want them to pick up where they left off... except Ianto didn't even know where that was.
Sure, they'd fucked a few times, a blow job in the archives here and there, but it was just Jack letting off steam as Gwen toyed with him while she fucked Owen and strung along Rhys, right? At least, that's what Ianto told himself every night he lain awake at night wondering where Jack was, who he was with for the months he was gone.
Then out of nowhere, Jack was back just as suddenly as he disappeared. If that wasn't enough, Captain John Hart with his smarmy mouth and his history with Jack arrive too. He made it well known that Jack and John were lovers, though Jack tried to make it less than John had.
What the hell was Ianto doing here, sitting in this restaurant? Jack had said that John was a reminder of his past and he wanted him gone. And gone he was. But that didn't mean that Ianto was his future. Jack never did relationships before.
“Ianto?”
He looked up, startled. “Yes?”
“Are you alright? You seem... distracted.”
“Just thinking,” Ianto replied, looking back at the menu. “Everything on here looks so...”
“You have no idea what's on there do you?” Jack asked, amused.
Ianto just smiled, and resumed looking at the menu. When their waiter arrived and asked if they'd like to order, Ianto looked up and said, “Ah, oui, pourrions nous avoir des douzaine Huîtres du moment pour que l'entrée partage, et pour moi, le filet de Turbot et le noix de Saint-Jacques, merci.”
“Naturellement, monsieur.” The waiter then looked expectantly at Jack, “Et vous, monsieur?”
Jack stared at Ianto, dumbfounded.
“Jack. What do you want to order?” Ianto prompted, smirking as he browsed the wine menu.
“Uh. Yeah. I'll have the same as Ianto,” Jack said, shutting his menu, his eyes still on his dinner companion.
The waiter, watching them, noted that it was the younger of the two men who was taking charge of the meal ordering and returned his attention to him to take the wine order. Ianto confirmed they would decide on dessert after their main meal. The waiter bowed, took the menus and left after confirming his choice of wine was “magnifique.”
“Where did you learn to speak french?” Jack asked, his eyes glittering with interest as he leaned forward on the table.
Ianto blushed slightly under his scrutiny. “My school had a language course requirement. I had an aptitude.”
“You have an aptitude for a lot of things, Mr Jones,” Jack flirted.
“Yes, well, be that as it may, it has come in handy for things like ordering meals in restaurants.” Ianto looked down at his hands.
The waiter returned with their wine, which he poured into a glass and offered to Ianto for tasting. As it was to his satisfaction, he poured two glasses and left them alone again.
“Drinking wine, Jack? This is a special occasion,” Ianto commented.
Jack smiled softly. “Yes, it is.” He twisted the wineglass stem in his fingers. “You know, I wasn't sure this night would actually happen.”
“Our date, you mean?” Ianto clarified.
Jack nodded. “I... I really did come back for you, Ianto. When I left... there wasn't time to explain. I needed answers. Answers I'd been waiting a long time for, and only one person could give them to me.”
“The Doctor.”
Jack nodded sadly.
“Did you get your answers, Sir?” Ianto looked down at his wine.
“Don't.” Ianto looked up Jack's voice. “Don't call me that here, now. Please.” The anguish Ianto heard made his heart clench.
Ianto nodded. “Did you get your answers, Jack?” he asked again.
“Some of them. Some he couldn't give me. And I found some answers to questions I didn't know I had.”
Ianto nodded again.
“Ianto?” Jack waited until his date looked up at him. “The Doctor asked me to stay with him. I told him no, that I had to come back. I had people who needed me. A good team...” he trailed off. He looked down. “I wanted to tell him that I had someone waiting for me, but I didn't know if I did or not.”
Ianto sighed. “You were gone for months, Jack.”
“I know. I'm sorry. If I could have come back I would have!” Jack reached across the table for Ianto's hand. “I swear, if I thought telling you what happened would benefit in anyway, I would, but it won't. It won't help either of us. Please, you have to trust me.”
Ianto snorted. “Trust. You want me to trust you, Jack. Fancy dinners aren't going to make everything okay.”
“I know.”
Ianto sighed again, but didn't pull his hand away. Instead, he turned his hand over and slid his palm against Jack's. The warmth he felt anchored him. The emptiness from the past months was slowly dissipating, and while Ianto wanted to hate him for leaving him in the lurch, Ianto knew that Jack would have come back sooner if he could have. He didn't know how he knew it, but he just knew it.
“It's a good start though,” Ianto said softly, looking through his lashes to watch as Jack's eyes flicked up in surprise at his words. Jack's hand tightened on his.
“Ianto...”
“Jack, I... I can't go back to the way things were. I'm not saying I want to be out and proud, I think we both know that that isn't me. But I can't be... I can't...”
“Ianto. You're not. You're not some dirty secret. Believe me. You're my choice. I came back for you. I know it's not easy, we're not easy, with the life that we have but... we have something, don't we? Something that's worth working at?”
Ianto smiled for the first time since the waiter walked away. “I thought you didn't do labels?”
“We're not labeling... we're just not hiding. We do things that normal people do. We have dinners, we … we go to the movies if you want. We date. Is that okay?” Jack asked. When Ianto frowned, he sighed. “You deserve to be more than just a... a fuck buddy, Ianto. I'm trying to do that.”
The waiter appeared with their entree and placed it in the centre of their intimate table, leaving without a word at Ianto's mumbled merci.
“Is that what you want, Jack?” he asked softly. He dared to look up, his heart thundering in his chest.
Jack looked Ianto straight in the eyes. “Yes. It's what I want.”
Ianto nodded once and picked up his fork, a smile spreading across his features.
After a moment of them eating in silence, Jack asked, “Hey... while I was... away... was there...?” Ianto reached for another oyster and as he tipped it down his throat, he stared at Jack. Jack swallowed hard. “So, was that a no?”
Ianto reached for his wineglass and sipped his wine. “No, Jack. There was no one else,” he said softly.
“Oh. Oh okay.” Jack smiled widely. “No, I mean. Yeah. Good. I didn't think there...” he picked at an oyster, and toyed with it for a moment before he admitted softly, “Me either.”
Ianto lifted his wine glass. “A toast, I think.” Jack lifted his too. “To new beginnings.”
Jack grinned. “To new beginnings.” After sipping his wine Jack paused, then asked, “Hey, aren't oysters an aphrodisiac?”
Ianto's answer was to smirk. Jack threw his head back and laughed. Their main course couldn't get there fast enough. He had a feeling dessert would be had back at the Hub.
