Ah, yes, it does seem these days that snow season is simply delayed. Which is a pity as it means I don't get snow when I want it and get an overabundance when I don't.
*Sighs, too tired at the thought to bother shaking a fist at the weather, which never accomplishes much in New England anyway.*
Is it that winter's delayed? I didn't think about it that way, but you might be right. I usually keep track of the snow fall in my calendar, and we haven't had October or November snows at all in recent memory. January, though...
If the snow first starts to melt and then it freezes again, that is really a most unfortunate mess to get around on. And melting snow in a city looks so dirty and just awful *sigh*.
The refreezing is just awful, isn't it? I've been walking in the street rather than on the sidewalk after two very close calls these past few days. (My whole body aches from the wrench of trying to say upright.) Am I less steady on my feet than I used to be? In any case, I can see how folks break a bone out there. I worry about the older folks in the neighborhood. M.
The trash is a problem at so many levels. The poor folks at the trash company can't complete their routes and are probably going to need to do overtime this weekend to catch up. The janitorial staff in my building (I'm in a big apartment building) can't do any thing with the trash the residents have thrown away and are also facing a big push next week. And residents are dealing with the return of the mice we were trying to get rid of earlier. *sigh*
I like the idea of snow spikes!
And you're probably right about the cold weather being good for certain things, mosquito control among them. (No worries on the payroll front; all is well there.) M.
Weather is becoming a bit less predictable, I think. We've had quite a mild winter here this year. Last year we were slammed with snow. Personally, I prefer something in between, but alas, Mother Nature hasn't consulted me. Hopefully DC will get dug out soon and things will get back to normal for you. Uncertain and sudden changes in routine can make anyone cranky!
You're right about it becoming less predictable (and Kiwi mentioned above that she thinks our snow season's moving later in the year). Global warming is really frightening.
May your winter say relatively mild, with just enough snow to keep things magical! M.
It's interesting, because Minnesota is totally prepared for that sort of storm. They'd be all over it, and honestly, it would barely slow us down. And yet it's been you lot out East getting all the big snows these past few years! We haven't gotten a multiple foot snow drop (at once) in nearly five years now. It's very confusing!
Ugh, that melting and refreezing bit is the worst! Hope your sidewalks are safe and passable again soon!
My teaching assistant went to school in Chicago, and that's what she said, too--places with Serious Winter really know how to handle the snow. She never once missed a day of classes due to the weather. DC's unprepared...and yet we seem to get in this situation once a year or so, which means it's not really that out-of-the-usual.
No multiple-foot snowfalls! That really surprises me.
Thanks for the kind words on the sidewalks! I shouldn't be so cranky, but I'm coming off a near-disaster earlier this week and feeling like the sidewalks are out to get me. :( M.
