This is my stripped down version of the lovely fingerless wrist warmers made by
becky_h Click for her wrist warmers and
her directions Basic fingerless mitts
Stitches used: HDC = Half double, CH = chain. SL ST= slip stitch
Gauge: 4 rows = 1.75 inches 6 hdc = 1.5 inches
Knitting worsted weight yarn, and G/6/4.00mm hook, or whatever gets you close to gauge, although for this project, you can wing it without a gauge swatch and still come up with nice mitts. Whatever gets a result that fits is sufficient.
You will be working along the side that goes vertically up your wrist/arm-- vary the length of the starting chain to get the length of wrist warmer you want. Thumb shaping for 30 is - 10 sts, 5 sl st, 15 sts - if you make your mitts longer or shorter, you may wish to vary the numbers on the thumb shaping.
Ch 30, plus 2 for the first stitch.
Row 1 - HDC in each chain, starting 2 from the hook, chain 2, turn.
Rows 2-8 - HDC in the back loop of each stitch. chain 2, turn.
Row 9 - HDC in the back loop of for the first ten stitches. Slip stitch into the next five. Continue with HDC into the end of the row, chain 2, turn.
Row 10 - HDC in the back loop for the first fifteen (she had ten) stitches. Chain five (over the previous rows slip stitch). HDC in the back loop to the end of the row. chain 2, turn.
Rows 11- HDC in back loop of each stitch, including the chain. Chain 2, turn. (look! It's a thumb hole)
Carry on with HDC in the back loop, chain 2, turn, until beginning and working edge meet over your palm.
Fold piece so beginning edge is in front, ch 1, insert hook through first loop on the other side of the beginning chain and through the back loop (why not the front loop? gotta try it) yo and pull through everything, sl st made. Repeat with each starting chain loop and hdc until you run out of stuff to join. Sew end in, and hide the starting end.
