What was really cool was the handle on her "lunchbox" coming loose, and she and I fixing it - I showed her where the little metal tabs needed to go back in, and she hammered 'em flat! She was so proud!!

That sounds great! What kind of things?
Doing stuff with my dad mostly resulted in me getting yelled at for not doing something right (he was not patient with a little kid with no dexterity).

I keep trying to ensure that she spends some time with him other than the time he spends getting her dressed and fed and ready to go in the mornings...

I was a daddy's girl all the way, I went hunting, I worked on cars, I played with tools, if he was doing it I was there, and he just smiled and let me hang around. My dad was pretty patient in that way. he wasn't mr affectionate, but he was always willing to let me hang around and sometimes let me do little stuff. Some stuff I just got to watch mostly, but other stuff he just handed me something and let me make my mess.
