Oh no! That must have been a horrendous moment for Ryou, learning that he was not able to read the writings of this world! I would have been absolutely devastated, for sure.
What a wonderful little story! I think the interactions between Leyam and Ryou are definitely among my favorite. I can't wait to see what Ryou does end up doing as a way of work... should be interesting!
Thanks for sharing!

Yup, that was definitely a Bad Day for Ryou - as it would be for me. Hell, that's why I even thought of this scene; my mind was speculating about what Ryou's first day in Sura would be like. 'If I was in Ryou's situation and I wanted to get my bearings and rest and recoup my physical and mental energy at the same time, the first thing I'd do is...um, find a book! Oh, wait.' And then of course I had to go and write this scene (Ryou hates me)

one arm against his chest in a heraldic pose and the other pointing straight at Ryou, the gunsight for a suddenly stern and forbidding expression.
... ahaha. XD love how theatrical he is.

Your country's collectors must have such an easy job of it, may I have a twelfth of their bountiful joy
*snickers*

This may surprise you, but I have never actually bought bread at the market myself."
... XD doh.

Loved the conversation. Loved tired!Leyam. *squishes* (this is not making me ship them any less, just so you know. >.>) Also loved Nicodeme, who is always close by looking like a harmless little boy whore, but who really isn't. I'd like to see some interaction with him and Ryou at some point. ♥ But what I love the most is that to do his job Ryou is going to have to learn to talk to people. Bwahaha. It'll be good for you, man!

Leyam is such a fun character to write after all those stony faced guys I usually stick with!
We'll see a very short scene of interaction between Ryou and Nicodeme in the next chapter. I don't have any other booked, but then again scenes creep up on me in this fic.

*grins* It's got to be hard to live up to the last chapter -- I mean, The Talk, in its infinite variations, is always potentially funny, but especially when it's a fish out of water story like this one. Anyway, I loved it. Ah, Ryou. Only you would accidently travel to another world, get involved with a prince, and end up calculating his royal brother's taxes for fun.

That poor guy, though. He'll have to learn to read! Three languages or more, probably. I do not envy him.

And I think this might be a typo:

Ever bow needs its own length of cord. Ever = every?

'Ah, Ryou. Only you would accidently travel to another world, get involved with a prince, and end up calculating his royal brother's taxes for fun.'

Indeed. But that's part of his charm.

As a truly educated man, he should know four languages: Latin, Greek, Assyrian and Avestan. None of which are even remotely similar to Japanese. If he can squeeze in the languages of Ur and Kush, he could earn a good living as a scribe.

Thanks for the typo spotting!

Oh goodness, poor Ryou! I could not imagine the shock and loss of realizing that you may never be able to read anything ever again. I suppose he could (and probably should) try to learn, but switching so late in life is going to be unbelievably hard.

Oh, just try and STOP this guy from learning the languages. Unfortunately Ryou, like a lot of people who are very good at maths, is only so-so in languages, especially at his age, but then again, he's going to have one hell of an incentive ^^;

Loved these last two chapters. Never knew that about the intracrural preference of the Greeks and others; interesting! I join others in a deep sympathy for Ryou about the sudden barrier confronting him...all those scrolls and nary a one he can read!

Hmm, wonder what this Tupila will be like?

Yay, I educated someone! And I'm sure this is a piece of knowledge you'll be able to drop in a future conversation! Am I right?

I would be as shell-shocked as Ryou in his situation, which is why it occured to me to write this piece. He'll have to learn! We'll be meeting Tupila very briefly in an upcoming chapter.
