Well, I suppose this is a classic instance of "be careful what you wish for." I was wanting some experience on a boat.

[Then, written and unhackably locked.]

I didn't intend for things to progress this way. I'm sorry.

The w-word. Always a tricky one.

[ written: ] I don't think it's the sort of thing you really can ever plan out, to be honest.

Why shouldn't we swim?

The local wildlife is aggressive if disturbed.

Right... so like shark ray wildlife or like Unagi wildlife?

Both have been known to cause problems with our cargo transport.

I, Admiral James Norrington, of His Majesty's Royal Navy in affiliation with the East India Trading Company hereby do submit my name for consideration in a position of high command. It is a station for which I have long prepared, and in which I have much experience. Truly there are few here who can attest to my abilities, but nevertheless I must insist that I be secured a place in command of a naval vessel with all haste. To choose otherwise would be to endanger the men and women of this draft unduly and jeopardize the success of this mission.

Insist, huh? How very forward. And here I thought you were the coy type.

There is a place for being coy. This is not that place. There is a time besides, and this is not it. Forgive me, but I must insist.

[Hornblower has taken a cue from the senior officer.]

Captain Horatio Hornblower, of His Britannic Majesty's Royal Navy. I have been at sea for twelve years-- I served on the 74-gun gun Justinian as midshipman, 64-gun Indefatigable as midshipman, acting-lieutenant, and lieutenant, 74-gun Renown as lieutenant. I have commanded the 18-gun Retribution and the 20-gun Hotspur. I was promoted from commander to post-captain just prior to my arrival to this place.

I would consider it an honour to be put in command of one of the ships.

Lieutenant Kennedy. I will vouch for his ability to command.

Thank you, Mr. Kennedy.

[We'll be formal right now. Public communications and such.]

Several of you were targeted specifically for the fact that you have experience in commanding or serving upon these vessels. I think you'll find them familiar, more or less.

Sailing ships. Large in scale. Details and schematics can be found on the ships themselves when you arrive. You should have time to check them over.

[Well, that's a reasonable attitude. They do only have two days to figure out who's going to lead them, and fighting over who it should be wouldn't get them anywhere. Still, Nill doesn't know anyone on the voting list, so she figures it's probably best to ask them a question or two before voting.]

What was the worst situation you had to take care of back in your world? As a captain?
