Let me ask around about locking solutions. They make a sort of box that would enclose your bikes,making them harder to steal and protecting them,but I don't know much about them.
There are some bike hanging solutions that might work.
Do you have covered parking? Any space on the ground floor? Elevator?

No covered parking. Only a tiny lobby for the mailboxes on the ground floor. No elevator.

in NYC the bike messengers regularly remove one tire to deter the casual thief. a tire is easier to carry upstairs than a whole bike would be.

That's a great idea, especially for the first week or so until we figure out some kind of permanent solution. I'm a little embarrassed I didn't think of that myself; I also have a quick-release seat that would be easy to remove. Thanks!

Ask Justyna about bike locks too. They put a theft proof seat lock on Fi's bike that is awesome.
