first 30

i felt that the first thirty pages to The Things They Carried were redundant and repetitive. i think the author was trying to use that particular style to convey awe and the reality of the war in the readers mind, but i could only read so much of it with out losing much of my interest. idk how well it worked on other people in class but ive seen ( Read more... )

I agree with the repetitiveness of it. i also kind of lost interest in it after awhile, and was so close to putting the book down because i was getting bored with it. but i'm hoping the repetitiveness ends soon!!!!

I wonder if you're having precisely the reaction O'Brien wants you to in terms of the "redundant list" of items the men carried. Do you think O'Brien wants you to feel the mind-numbing sensation of war that the Alpha Company experienced? Do you think he wants you to struggle with the weight of so much to carry--mentally, physically, emotionally? Just some things to ponder.....
