I don't know if any of you have read A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, but a report by the Smoking Gun basically debunks every single "fact" that Frey talks about concerning his life and the book. I just wanna meet this guy and kick the shit out of him. What a prick.

I don't really see what the big deal is. Storytelling skews the truth no matter what, so why is total fabrication any worse than the regular distortion imposed on the past by our own memories of it

I would've agreed with you on the "not wanting to pull one over on us" thing...if he didn't go on national television and told the world that all of the accounts in the book were factual. The idea that all of this fame and becoming a figurehead was somehow unintentional is ridiculous. If you had seen the interview he goes on and on about how his "true" story has inspired millions and how much he loves speaking for the myriad of junkies and hookers whom he has "taken under his wing". In fact, his exact words were "I give these people a voice and show others that we are people too."

I'm all about fiction when it's being called fiction, but I'm not cool with someone writing a memoir if 90% of the book is going to be pure crap.

If he's is claiming to have lived these experiences he's lying, otherwise it would be called fiction. You can't claim auto-biographical literature to be true, if it is indeed false. That's what make something fiction. Or he could have said semi-auto-biographical, at leat to cover his ass.
