Coming back to LJ by Meme

It's been ages since I posted so I figured I'd have a stab at coming back to LJ. Will do a review of the last 6+ months at some point for people but for the time being I have a meme for the PC gamers out there ( Read more... )

I don't have 5, and the rants aren't overly vitriolic... but here are a couple that come to mind.

Doom 3 - I've a weird thing about babies in games and the media in general. After the baby crawled out of the vent, I stood up turned off my Xbox and put the game back in the box.

Project Gotham Racing - I'm just not that into racing games!

Dragon Age: Origins - Well, here now is a doozy. I found this supposedly immersive RPG to be inflexible and unresponsive. The difficulty level was all over the place, to the extent that after a couple of hours trying to deal with the final boss on easy, I quit on it. It annoyed the sh!te outta me. It's so bad in my eyes that it makes my face bleed!

Fallout 3 (XBox 360) - Combat seemed fun and I liked the whole thing of pausing the action, targeting limbs or heads, then sitting back as you proceeded to blow their limbs/head off in slow motion... however, so. Much. Walking. Every. Where. I lost interest very quickly after the first couple of missions.

Thief (PC) (the first one) - Level 1: Break in to a mansion and clean the place out of all its valuables. Avoid the guards by hiding in the shadows and knocking out the ones you can't hide from. Awesome.
Level 2: Part 1 - Sneak through a haunted mine filled with skeletons that you can't hide from or knock out, but if you kill them mean you fail the mission... then Part 2 - break a guy out of prison. 1. Lame and irritating. 2. Awesome. I can't even remember what the 3rd level was, but it must have been pretty pants as I think I gave up at that point.

Half-life 2: Episode 1 Wander round for ages with an ineffectual gravity gun whilst Alyx (the AI-controlled partner) kills everything for you, then when you do eventually get a gun you ( ... )

Your last paragraph reminded me of all those games where you play but one member of a squad yet all of the bad guys constantly and only shoot at you.

Half Life
I found the end boring. I was almost finished it (read a strategy guide later) it started really good and then just tailed off into tedium. Got bored. Wandered off basically.

Unreal Tournament 3
I have actually finished this game but never without cheating. Seriously - what the hell is up with the last 1-on-1 fight? In terms of difficulty she is off the chart with relation to the rest of the game, even on easy she's just impossible. I have a longstanding dislike of jumping around like an idiot in FPS games as well. The most annoying people to play against were always the ones who spent half of the time in the air and the final boss in UT3 does this nonstop.

World of WarcraftOk, it doesn't actually have a finish and I swear I'm going to get back to it and get to lvl 80 (or whatever it is now) someday. I have all the best of intentions, I really do. Unfortunately my problem with the world of warcraft persists - you have to do stuff with people. I don't like people. I like soloing things, I like running around by myself. I do ( ... )

I'm with you on the Riddick game. I got it free with a graphics card, installed it, then it refused to play because I apparently had an incompatable graphics card.

I could never get on with the cack-handed controls on Tomb Raider either.

Hired Guns: Man, I feel so old... that was so long ago. Great game (for the time), lots of puzzles, action, monsters everywhere... and then the floppy disk got scratched. I was half-way through it... noooooooo!!!

Baldur's Gate 2: I was pretty much at the end when I realised I just didn't care anymore. Freezing the game, giving the characters orders and then unfreezing, repeat until everyone is dead. Yawn.

Bioshock: I loved this game. I was playing it and got to the start of the last level, but had to stop playing that evening as I had friends over. And I never went back to it. Not sure why, but probably because it had been spoilered for me long before. I knew what was coming, so couldn't be bothered actually playing through it.

Mass Effect: Way too much driving around more or less identical rocks just to kill a handfull of bad guys guarding one McGuffin or another.

Riven: I'll get around to finishing it... eventually.
