My thoughts on "Star Trek"

So, I dragged Ben out this weekend to see the Star Trek film after it being touted as a second-coming of movies to me. Editorial note: touting a movie such usually turns the movie into a colossal letdown because the more you build up a movie to me, the more likely that my expectations are going to be so ridiculously uncalibrated that any movie ( Read more... )

Ponderous is a heavy word.... Systematical and to the point is what I had in mind. :)

On Point No. 4, I will say there was at least a reason why both Spock and Kirk were on that planet. Kirk was booted from the ship almost immediately after Vulcan went bye-bye, and Spock Prime had been dumped there specifically so he could see Vulcan be destroyed but be helpless to do anything about it. Their proximity to one another as well as to Scotty, on the other hand...well, sometimes a plot needs to be convenient.

Of note, though, Spock Prime was the One Person Who Could Help Them himself, since he knew the equation for trans-warp beaming and Young Scotty had not yet figured it out.

That is true. It just struck me as a bit too easy to drop them within such an easy walking distance of each other.

Agreed on all points. I did think Quinto did a really good job with Spock and I'll give him suitable praise as such. I also liked that they decided to capitalize on the Uhura-Spock thing, which was hinted at in the original series so often.

I think the kid Kirk scene also suffered from having been show a billion times in the previews, so any punch it might've had was lost by the time everyone saw the movie.

Yeah. I'm surprised that instead of siren they didn't just have "TAG LINE!!! TAG LINE!!!" coming from the robot. I also never got why that scene was in the previews, but hey, I'm not a Hollywood marketing guy.

J.J. Abrams has always been a TV kind of guy and you just can't use fridge logic if you want a movie to last. Audiences usually paying closer attention to a movie, and you have a lot less time to backfill plot holes. Abrams, Kurtzmann and Orci basically looked at it, said "Eh, most people won't care", and called it a day.

That seems to suggest that audiences are easily distracted, like they were just jingling keys in front of us to make us be quiet. I guess things going boom does that. Who doesn't like shiny things? This guy sure doesn't, even if it's just keys that are jingling in front of me...

They jingled a lot of hot guys in front of me, so I don't give two shits about plotholes. What plotholes??

> I will hand them some kudos for creating some dramatic stakes [with Vulcan's destruction].

I will - if they ever do anything with it in the subsequent movies or TV shows. I somehow doubt they will.

As others have said, the only reason for the car chase was the N*kia product placement.

Yeah, I fully expect a "magic reset." That would be a shame, but we do love the Vulcans.
