I have been building a reasonable computer for my sister to take with her when she goes away to oaklahoma for collage in a few weeks. Five random computers from my uncles business got droped off here and its my job to strip them down and rebuild them into a single giant zeplin computing unit. Back in the day you had to install special software to get disks > 520 or so MB to be recognized by DOS. Later similar software was needed to get Windows 95 to see all of a disk > 2 gigs. The problem could also be that the bios can't handle a disk that large either.
I can think of two ways that a 486 MIGHT be able to use a disk that large. The first involves an aftermarket disk controller (like one of the Promise ones), but that will only work if it's a newer 486 with PCI slots. Other than that the only choice you really have is some kind of Unix like operating system, but something tells me your sister probably doesn't want to do her homework in vi.

i finaly ended up calling there teck support. They recomended wiping the disk. But useded your advice and found a software patch on the net. Again, thank you, a 40GB hard drive is a tarible thing to waste!
