I loved the way they weren't looking at each other and the way they still loved each other but still knew it wasn't working.
Trouble is that they needed to agree that they needed to be there for each other and instead they'd given their happiness away - and for what? For governments that would collapse anyway.
Great job. Loved it even if it did have any unhappy ending.

Thank you, Diane! I figured that Mara knew what was coming but didn't want to face it; hence, the refusal to meet Luke's eyes.
They completely should have, I agree. The trouble is that both of them have such a strong sense of duty that if they really felt they were needed apart for the greater good, they might just do that - most especially so early in the marriage, before they had a chance to really cement their lives together.
Mind, I think that in most circumstances, they'd refuse to give up, but the lyrics of Dylan's song and the knowledge that it was written when his marriage to Sara was on the rocks big time (they divorced not long after this song was written) intrigued me, and I wanted to explore how Luke and Mara might fit into that template.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. :D
