I think not having read anything actually helped my enjoyment of the Golden Compass. I think your right that they won't actually make the sequels. I don't know if that is a bad thing since they would have to mutate them incredibly so that they would be "family friendly".

No Country infuriated me. Up until a point it was fantastic, then it just stops. I am curious about your thoughts on it.

I am Legend is good. Some changes have been made from the fantastic story, but many of those are to make it a "blockbuster" instead of a horror film.

I was very dissapointed with where they ended things with the movie. I suppose if they are not going to make the sequels then this ending was fine, because the actual ending really pushes you to find out what happens next ( ... )

Agreed re: GC.

I saw I Am Legend in IMAX on Wednesday night, in fact-I wouldn't recommend going that far, but it's definitely a visually impressive movie, especially in the first half or so, and so probably worth seeing in the theatre.

It's helpful that I haven't read the trilogy in a couple years, so I knew what was going on, but some of the finer plot points were very fuzzy in my memory. It's weird, plot issues usually get me, and I admit that the plot was weak and rushed in many places, but I adore Pullman's world in these books so much that I think I was just completely infatuated with every visual piece of excitement and drama during the film. I must admit to being filled with an adrenaline-packed swooping feeling of joy during the film's entirety, except for the end of course, which was lame. It was like filling my veins with imaginative heroin... not necessarily good for you, but GOD it feeds a need, and it's addictive as hell. I really hope they make the sequels.

*shrug* I make no excuses for my strange priorities. :-)

Movie from a book create_universe December 24 2007, 04:06:52 UTC
As I was watching the movie I was very aware that this was a movie made from a book. There were a number of very nice dramatic visual scenes. But often they were patched together by somewhat hurried stretches, or voiced over exposition. And I got the impression that a lot of the tricky stuff like dust and the little compass thingee got a bit glossed over or simplified.

I have not read the books. After I saw the movie and thought about it some I found myself making comparisons between this movie and LOtR. I did read those books. I wonder if people who had not read the books had the same feelings watching Peter Jackson's effort.
